There's probably a sh*tload of paperwork needs doing before the subbies will even turn up for a job nowadays, then more during and after the work is carried out. George Stephenson will be turning in his grave.... Rolling Eyes

Maybe, but they control and maintain a heck of a lot more track miles than our lot.
Plus, I admire the way the American authorities get on with the job. They have the willing and the necessary equipment.
American railroads have always been streets ahead of the UK in terms of safety.

Just watching on ITV the man behind the design of the carriages. They are built for safety. The luggage compartments are enclosed, and all the furniture is made with round edges. The windows if break on impact would shatter like a car windscreen.

Whereas others aren't? I think they should ALL be built for safety!

Looks like the old 125's on the G.N.E.R lines etc are not built like the virgin trains. Maybe more money needs to be ploughed into the railways?

The Pendolinos are designed and built in Italy and I use them regularly between The Sailyour Mansion and London Euston. They're excellent. The older 125's are rubbish (although I don't use GNER).

Ploughing money into the railways? Well, I'd say that Virgin Trains has done exactly that. The State can't plough money into infrastructure.......... thanks to the wisdom of the Thatcher woman!

Yes I know what they are called. Someone has to blame it on the Tories, then I would move upwards to the present day.

Well, yes. Railtrack was a huge and complex corporation that was the product of a carving up of British Rail. By Thatcher.

Then when Railtrack collapsed, the phoenix that had to rise out of the ashes was Network Rail.

It's not possible to re-organise these monoliths in a few days, and I think that the Blair administration has done much to improve the rail system. I use rail to get into and out of London regularly, and it's much better now than ever it was - even in the "glory days" of British Rail.

Ella,

Looking at the number of your postings here it seems you now accept the positive contribution of Mark O's news threads.

This is most gratifying, no more swiping then Smile

Only if he declares "Mark Occomore, R2OK News" at the end of each report. He has to sound professional. Smile
