A friend tells me that none other than Richard Allinson was a guest paper reviewer this week on BBC London's Breakfast Show. An unusual choice, but perhaps a logical one given that the station is still after a new host to replace Jono Coleman in that slot some six months after his departure.

Was that an audition I wonder???

Yes there must be a lot of competition to be the 10th most listened to breakfast show in London.

I agree. It's got a rotten profile in the capital and it irks me that a talent as great as Baker wastes his time on such a tin-pot local station with about half a dozen listeners in total. He does get a free reign with the music and content though, which is the only saving grace and something 'Brown-Eyed Girl' R2 could learn a lot from!

For Allinson though BBC London Breakfast would be a step up from tin-pot BBC Oxford and three drunken squaddie listened-to BFBS.

After Jono I think LDN is looking for someone similarly 'commercial' with a national reputation to inherit the slot.

Lady B i wonder like Ernie said if he was approached for the new Smooth where Mark Goodier has ended up.
I have no idea on the listening figures for BFBS but he has a free reign on there.

This is indeed interesting news.

Richard wherever he is working always carry out an excellent review of the daily papers if that is a feature of the show.

How long is the newspaper slot given on Radio London.

I wonder as you say if this was an informal interview for Richard.

Personally I think there are going to be changes in the Radio 2 schedules shortly. I think Wogan will retire, Evans will be moved from Drivetime to replace him and Richard will get the drivetime gig.

Plus this recent Terry Wogan getting paid for CIN will not do his profile any good.
Strange how this came out while he was away. Embarassed Embarassed
Getting back to Drivetime i would enjoy Richard 5-7 with Stuart to cover when needed. Very Happy Very Happy

In response to those predictions...

Yes,

Possibly,

and,

VERY unlikely

DGMW I love Ricardo, but they've gone to far now with their evolution. The days of signing fairly minor names to daytime shows are well and truly over.

So in your opinion is Richard never likely to return to Radio 2 except providing cover for mainstays who have holiday breaks etc.

Stuart Maconie could walk down most High Streets and not be recognised.
Yes Richard would be the same.
I just can not see Chris in the Morning as it will be just too much for the over 45's to take.

I still think we have not heard the last of Rossy for Breakfast

Tragically, yes. The only hope he might have is replacing someone like Lester or (fingers crossed) Dutta & Mitchell, but I believe the chances of seeing Ricardo out during the day on R2 for a permanent show are anorexic.

On paper Ross is the man most likely but a) I really don't think he'd want it and b) He'd never play Simply Red et al

Baker, though perhaps not as 'A' list, is still by far the most willing and able in my opinion. Interactively surreal and creative - which Ross isn't - to keep the TOGS happy, and firmly in touch with the younger end of the audience.

I'd love a gig on Oxford or BFBS, but for someone of Ricardo's talents they are selling him short.

It's like putting Coronation St on some minor satellite channel!

Ah, so there is nothing wrong with BBC Radio Oxford or BFBS. That is NOT what your previous statement suggested Confused

I was being pixyish John, for comedy effect, and to emphasise that for someone who once had a hugely popular Saturday afternoon show and deputised at Breakfast on the nation's most-listened to radio station, these two channels are, by anyone's standards, a bit of a come down.

One of the big London stations like Heart should be bending over backwards to have him. Even Capital, in their present Titanic form, could do a lot worse than to get him back for mid-mornings or something.

He just sounds sooooo out of place on Oxford. A little less so on BFBS but who the heck's listening?!

Lady,

>>He just sounds sooooo out of place on Oxford. A little less so on BFBS but who the heck's listening?!<<

Maybe, but I am surprised that someone like yourself who works in radio would express such a low opinion of BFBS and the valuable service it provides for thousands of our lads at the front.

That's not really what I meant and I never once disputed the service they provide overseas. All I'm saying is someone of Allinson's profile and experience I would have thought deserves to be on a more prominent, higher profile station serving this country, that's all.

I'm not a huge fan of Allinson, but I am genuinely surprised that someone as reliable as him (and with a decent fanbase) isn't in a more high-profile slot. Oxford and BFBS may be fine stations but you'd think the likes of Magic and Century would love to have a Radio 2 DJ.

Ooo, yes. 'Magic'. Forgot about them. They already have the likes of Foxy and Eamonn Holmes. Then there's 'Smooth' with the likes of Goodier, Kevin Greening and Graham Dene. Allinson would fit in perfectly on either. 'Heart' I think offers maybe more the kind of playlist Richard used to deliver on Saturday afternoons. Again, big audience reach in London and the home counties and on their Brrmingham based frequency. A national name on their roster couldn't do them any harm, especially one as female friendly as Rich which let's face it is there core audience. That said RA is very adaptable. He can do the more rocky stuff. Even Virgin I don't think should be too proud not to want someone who's covered for Wogan and others on R2 many times.

As you say Ian, Oxford and BFBS may well provide a decent enough service for the audience they're aiming at, but profile wise they're not exactly up there with the big guns of UK radio. Allinson's aforementioned high-profile experience and adaptability therefore make it all the more difficult to understand why he hasn't been snapped up by one of them... However, maybe Oxford and BFBS allow him to keep a foot in at R2 for depping which Heart etc may not? ... Only when it becomes apparent his services are no longer required by R2 might he accept something more prominent and commercial I suspect.

Yeah, I get what you're saying, Lady. I honestly don't think Rich is hard up for work. At the moment it's like he's the James Bond everyone wanted but didn't get if you see what I mean - a huge fan base, just look at all the postings concerning Richard but no return to the top spot.

Personally, I will follow him wherever he goes, at BFBS he is plainly the lead DJ and it is a well structured, coherent show as was the Oxford Sunday show - rarely was he stuck for some banter - I listened to ken Bruce today 9after BFBS of course!!) and it seemed he was struggling for something to say so started talking about girls going out with no Knickers on!!

Some posters have referred to him just reading out our emails, etc - but don't most DJ's do this??

There is a great structure to all Richard's shows and they never get old - 3 of the best, if you like that, you'll like this (that one's gone a bit quiet though), some things you didn't know about.... and inbetween some really great music.

I really take the point about the high profilling DJ's at R2 and will he fit back in there but aren't the so called high profile DJ's the one's we're most complaining about - wossy, Brand, Evans??!!

Right, off me soapbox.

I do get the feeling he considers himself to be more of a BBC man these days despite his commercial radio potential. That paper review thing on London this week I'd have like to have heard, if only to see how he was billed/introduced. I really do think it was an informal audition.

Hi Andy-Good post about Richard.

I agree with you 100%-Richard's daily BFBS show is just 2 hours of top entertainment-Richard plays a whole mix bag of music including lots of new releases.

I too think Richard is not short of work or offers but do think he really enjoys his BFBS work and his Saturday show on BBC Radio Oxford.

I still hold out for Richard getting a show on BBC Radio 2-if not maybe he will decide to take a show on another station if he feels the need to.

Cheers Mark, me too - holding out for R2, id on't really want Rich going to other stations as I think of him as a beeb man! But I really like the BFBs show so if he does go to another station (pure speculation at this point as I genuinely feel he dropped Sundays to have a day with family) then I will follow....as long as I can get it on DAB or Internet!

Currently enjoying the album show on Oxford.
