For those remotely interested, Dan has just begun podcasting. These all- new shows are available via the itunes or whippet websites. Just search under Danny Baker's All-Day Breakfast Show.

If you want to hear Peter Kay guesting and Bing Crosby swearing, among other things, this is for you!

Downloaded the first one yesterday. As I'm bound to say, excellent!

Enjoy, Ian. Nice bit of exposure for Tiny Tim in there too! As you'll hear, he wasn't all 'tiptoe through the tulips'!

A word to the wise, if you haven't begun the download. It seems doing it from itunes rather than whippet is more successful.

Podcast #2 now available free via itunes. V.good. Hopefully this will get higher than No.5 in the podcast chart, which the first one achieved.

Ok Baker fans. The All Day Breakfast podcast is now here every day! And, what's more, unlike some, is not simply a 'best bits' cut and paste job. It's all brand new material.

(PS - Up a whopping fifteen places from yesterday's number 24 to number 9 in the itunes chart!)

Whilst I am very pleased for Mr Baker and his achievements, I should point out that the iTunes chart is generally regarded as being heavily rigged, so much so that Apple has received lots of high level complaints lately.

Interesting....

Might that explain why Russell Brand is always No.1?!?

NB: The 'Jimmy Carr Live' podcast is always in the itunes top ten. Something I find a little hard to believe unless it changes content regularly.

Hmm

I see that Baker's pilot ADBS shows also rises in the chart from the mid-seventies to No.16 following the release of the new daily ADBS podcasts. (No.9)

Now number three! And yet the only DJ anywhere near the top of that chart not on national radio, for shame!

Non-mover at No.3! Come on people. Give it a listen and help us shift Moyles and Brand off 1 & 2!

The All Day Breakfast Show, via itunes. The only podcast with added Alf Ipitittimus! (There's one for the teenagers!)

From Media Guardian - Organ Grinder. At the Radio Festival, Cambridge...

11am update

I have seen the future of radio - and its name is Danny Baker. The BBC London presenter, former Radio 1 DJ and one-time saviour of the TV chatshow has his own daily podcast - and hundreds of thousands of people are downloading it, writes John Plunkett.

It's called the All Day Breakfast and you can find more about it here. Who needs the BBC or commercial radio when you can stick your own show on the web? No-one. In a conference hall packed with industry executives who rely on talent to pull in the listeners, you can almost taste the fear.

No wonder Baker joked on his show that the podcast was the "noose around the neck of radio that would pull it slowly to its death". Baker says he was only joking.

The interesting thing is that Baker records his daily podcast while still presenting a show for BBC London. What does the BBC think of it? Baker puts his fingers in his ears and starts humming. I think he means they ignore it.

"I have been told as long as you are not charging for it, it's not a problem," said Baker.

But the problem is he is going to start charging for it - around £2 a week. 270,000 listeners at £2 a pop? Wow. Big money. It's almost as much as Jonathan Ross gets.

"They have said we would have a problem when you start charging for it but that's okay because I'll have a problem when I start charging for it as well - why would I want to go to work?"

And it's not only Baker who is going it alone. Paul Myers, chief executive of podcast download company wippit.com, which hosts the All Day Breakfast Show, says Baker is the first of a "long queue of presenters who are leaving traditional radio to go and do their own thing".

"The technology is there and the means of distribution is there. Now you can do your own thing, you can do it legally and you can build a fanbase [worldwide]".

I can feel the fear building in the room once again, and a whole heap of admiration (sprinkled with envy) for what Baker has done.

It is also a poke in the eye for those radio bosses who are axing DJs in favour of all-music daytime schedules. People listen to Baker for the words, not the music. He is warm, funny and a natural behind the mic. As Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards takes to the stage, it is also apt to remember his podcast is totally unregulated. Radio needs more people like him, not less.

(Are you reading this, Radio Two?!)

270,000 times £2! Great, but a lot of those won't pay any money let alone £2.

A lot of people will just download it from Bittorrent or similar.

Nice try but it won't work. If I was Baker I wouldn't give up the day job just yet!

270000 listeners, almost as many as radio Blunderside, another shining example of " You can fool some of the people all of the time"

Maybe, but he's still and consistantly ahead of Wogan, Wright and Evans in the official itunes podcast chart. Not bad for a man with (currently!) no national radio exposure on which to promote his wares!

Because one of the 'nightmares' doesn't present a dated 'Smashy and Nicey' style show and is consistantly way ahead of the other in the podcast charts, highlighting his popularity among the kind of audience R2 are trying to attract now.

I'm completely at a loss on this. ( again )

I think of Smashy & Nicey type shows as Tony Blackburn, DLT, Alan Freeman, Mike Read etc. not Steve Wright at all.

I'd say those DJ's actually liked a certain style of music where as Steve Wright doesn't appear to particularly like any, he plays what ever is current Rolling Eyes or oldies chosen by the listener Very Happy . His show is more for entertainment than musical content.

Geddon, I'd hardly call the dynamic, amusing, inventive ,Sony Award winning Mr Baker a nightmare. The guy's got a talent for radio and I think he'd bring a much needed lift to Radio 2's daytime schedule.

Because, contrary to popular belief, people like Evans and Baker have proven through awards, big listening figures, critical acclaim and, in Baker's case, a high placing over national radio competition in the download charts, that they are actually highly accomplished radio communicators.

What's the alternative then? Matthew Wright and Kate Thornton?!! Purlease!!

Radders 2 till 5
Maconie 5 till 7

I cannot fail to notice that during the length of this thread, Baker's podcast has slipped from 3 to 12.

Probably the reason why Sir Terry's podcast is not as high is the fact that TOGS tend not to have iPods.

Also, perpetually shouting at people does not make you(or Mr Evans) a highly accomplished radio communicator.

You don't have to have an ipod (or any mp3 player) to download a podcast and although Baker's may have slipped a few places he's still accomplished a great deal to get that high with precisely zero national exposure for the thing. Where are all the other local radio jocks podcasts in the chart then? Martin Kelner? - who incidentally I also enjoy.

I know and appreciate that the likes of Evans and Baker are not for you, but they are for some and this evident popularity backs that up.

Mr Baker's merits is just one thing that we will have to agree to differ on.

Why bring Evans into it? He may be Danny's mate but he has nothing like the ability of Mr Baker.
I'd quite happily usher Chris Evans through the same exit as Steve Wright and padlock it behind them. Laughing

Both were part of Matthew Bannister's "Brave new Radio 1", DB after DLT Publicly voiced fears over the new philosophy, CE because Bannister was a fan.

Both were unmitigated disasters.

I think 'disaster's is pushing it a bit. In Baker's case it was like replacing Your Hundred Best Tunes with Russell Brand. ie on a hiding to nothing with the inherited audience, despite being evolutionarily right and despite the presenters different, though innovative talents.

Got an interesting statistic to bring you tomorrow Lesley!

I think Baker has himself said that the Radio 1 was a wrong move. At the time Radio 1 was targeting the youff end of the market ( the reason for the DLT et al fiasco), and unfortunately for everyone that new targeted audience just didn't "get" Danny Baker's type of show, which is aimed at a totally different demographic.
I would say that the blame for the "unmitigated disaster" lies at the door of Matthew Bannister who misread his own target audience, not at Mr Baker simply who turned up and did HIS show.
Bannister knew what the Baker gig was and if that wasn't what he wanted then he shouldn't have hired him,Baker made it clear that HE wouldn't change just to suit Radio 1.
