I'm a big fan of Sir Terry but goodness didn't he sound grumpy this morning? Surely couldn't just have been the Budget although he did go on about it - I don't think he need worry about how much he pays in taxes or anything else.

I can't listen to Wogan mumbling and whittering on any more. It's all too boring.

It really is the King's New Clothes isn't it? Everyone laughs along politely coz El Tel is beyond reproach, but the simple fact of the matter is most of the stuff he reads out is just garbage. I've been listening to a lot of the show recently, just to research really, and it is incredible how many letters without point, substance or humour get past the radar.
Really embarrassingly bad stuff, and this is the UK's No.1!

Now, I'll be the first to admit that not all of Danny's correspondence is of Galton and Simpson material, but at least he brings even the drabbest communication alive with appropriate music and sound effects. Real creative theatre of the mind stuff.

Wogan's just got his feet up now and it shows. The whole things sounds tired and dated and above all, dry.

Time to get off the beach before the tide comes in Tel and let your BBC London apprentice take over.

Well he says ain't retiring so tough luck. Laughing

Maybe the barney with Alan Boyd earlier in the week didn't do his mood a lot of good.

I do hope, for everyone's sake, that we don't see another embarrasing JY situation as a result of Tel's reluctance to call it a day. Ouch! Despite my earlier comments Wogan was one of the reasons I got interested in radio in the first place and I maintain he was peerless in his first incarnation 72-84 when he put a little more effort in.

I sometimes feel he's read a letter out merely coz it was on top of the pile. Not because it was any good or worth broadcasting. The hesitations in his voice seem to back it up that this is the first time he'd looked at it!

Great shame. Put it out of its misery before standards drop even lower! I want to remember Wogan for gift of the gab greatness, not for some of the tosh he's rattling off sight unseen to pad out another 2 hours to get him closer to that sumptuous eight hundred grand.

Even Noddy Holder and (ever so slightly) Mark Radcliffe had a pop last night - suggesting that broadcasting has moved on, and Wogan has not kept up.

What happened to Wogan's producer this week? I missed that.

But then again he's hardly going to say "right that's it, I'm off" is he. Laughing To tell the truth I think he's sounding a bit subdued lately, he might be struggling to get going some mornings.

What the hell has it got to do with him? Rolling Eyes it's certainly seems to be pick on Terry season at the moment.

Aren't we all entitled to an off day or three? Terry is still by far the consumate professional that others wish they could be. Some of those who are often touted as suitable replacements could not hold a candle to the man. Terry remains the mainstay of my long drive to work, and his week- long temporary replacement has me reaching for the preset.

Lady B's reference to JY just goes to shown that the replacements are by no means as good as the incumbents. Jeremy is still more of a Telly person. and as for Clive Anderson - nuff said.

Keep up the good work - Terry

Well said and also remember Terry has lost his great friend Paul Walters and has had his team taken away from him.
I think in the circumstances Terry has done very well, I wasn't critcising when I said I thought he was a little subdued, it's hardly surprising given those things I mentioned above.
I hope he keeps going for as long as he feels happy doing it.

*big hug for Terry* Very Happy

I do get the feeling Tel could read out the washing instructions on his jumpers and the TOGS would still listen appreciatively, which of course is a great gift, but as things evolve this can't continue for much longer.

It does actually surprise me a little that - given how many hundred, thousand even, e-mails Wogan gets that a higher quality criteria isn't imposed on which ones get to air. This is breakfast radio and I've just heard so many recently where I've thought 'That was neither funny, nor informative, nor even a good observation! Why the hell did someone send that in, let alone Wogan put it out?!'

Lady B
The only stories i hear are from the same old people day in day out.
Donny Gal
Chuffer Dandridge
Heidi Vodka

and so on.
It is as though he feels obliged to read these out.

yes listener participation is great but where would he be without it.
I get the impression he has no real interest or enthusiasm about music.

i think as you say we need a new Captian of the helm.
Danny Baker
chris Tarrant have been mentioned frequently.

still feel rossy but as you say why work 5 days when 1 will do.

He dosen't choose them though, the producer does. Terry reads them 'cold' without having read them first.

As for Danny Baker, no thanks Rolling Eyes

The knives do seem to be out, don't they? I wonder if he's upset someone at the Beeb, as there's a real Alistair Campbell-style smear campaign going on!

He's always said he doesn't want a situation like JY found himself in, so I wonder if he might be considering his future?

I assume we've all seen this, by the way? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1d5tFHrTXY

Hmm... Must try harder for the prod then. As for Baker, much as I appreciate a TOGS initial recoil at the idea I really do think given the other likely candidates for the job Baker would surprise many in being one of the few, if not the only one to continue offering the same kind of surreal, silly interactive fodder Wogan's 8 million have been used to. Just try his 'All Day Breakfast Show' podcast via itunes, or the 'Afternoon Retreat' BBC London Show on listen again.

(But then if you'd rather have Russell Brand talking about his knob...??)

Someone's got to replace Wogan - and likely as not it'll be a comparatively unpopular choice with Wogan's current listeners - but at least better to make it someone unpopular who at least has a germ of an idea of how to engage a breakfast audience and with whom establish an entertaining dialogue. Ross and Evans are simply unable to do that to the same degree as Wogan and Baker.

The 'popular' likes of Allinson, Walker and Lester, trust me, will not be in the running.

At long last some intelligent postings about Wogan.

Lets face it the guy is past it, so is his show and he needs to retire gracefully and quickly.

The broadcasting world is changing all around him but he is still stuck in a timewarp/bubble of over 20 plus years ago.

Time for some fresh talent/ideas to be brought to the breakfast show.

Wogan has a bad week & everyone has the knives out for him. With friends like this, who needs enemies.

I think he is trying to change too much too quickly. That's the problem, not the other way around.

I've nothing against him but he does rely on input from listeners on most links.

I for one would prefer his style on a Sunday Morning say 9-12.
Reflecting on the news of the week and no traffic to mess with.

Well I'm sorry I started this! I wasn't really knocking him in general - just that particular morning. I'm afraid that any of the replacements mentioned i.e. Danny Baker, Jonathan Ross or Russell Brand would have the same effect on me as Chris Evans - switch off as soon as possible.
Sir Terry is still head and shoulders about almost all the other presenters on Radio 2. I guess what with the death of Paul Walters, the loss of his newsreader pals plus the CiN thing and the Eurovision cock up he has every right to be a bit subdued at the moment.

Don't be sorry mate, it's actually quite a good thread. I was just trying to give some indication as to why he might not have been in the best of moods.

Quote:

Yeah I know that, even I'm not foolhardy enough to think the dear fellow will go on forever. Laughing
I've nothing against Danny Baker but he's just not my cup of tea, if he does get the breakfast slot one day, well good luck to him, I shan't complain I just won't listen Laughing

Just a couple of other points, as has been mentioned Terry has had a bad couple of weeks with certain elements of the press out to get him. I thought he sounded a little rough this morning, like he was losing his voice. However he is not past it, not by a long way and if those that have the knives out lay off him for a while I'm sure he'll perk up.
I should think he's looking forward to his friend Deadly being with him next week.
Finally Terry has always admitted he relies on listeners writing into him, it's nothing new.

The pretenders to the throne are simply that - Pretenders.

There is currently no vacancy for the position of Master of the Breakfast Revels.

word is that Terry is coming under increasing presure from radio 2 management to speed up his retirement-Lesley Douglas is said to be eager to promote her golden boy Chris Evans on to breakfast thus allowing her to revamp the daytime line-up.Terry obviously resents this pressure.
In the meantime Lesley has had to make do with changing the breakfast host on 6 music instead.

I have posted comments mentioning that I'm listening less to Terry these days, but I certainly don't have the knives out for him.

Echoing several comments above, my feelings are that he seems to have had the rug pulled out from under his feet lately - obviously Paulie's death was an unavoidable tragedy, but this was then exacerbated by Boggy's retirement and then the removal of the newsreaders from the mix, replaced by someone who I have come to regard as being unsuitable for the style of the show (not her fault, though - she's been put in an unenviable position, it seems to me). All in all, it's small wonder that Terry's show appeals less and less to me, although I still try to catch it when I can. However, it doesn't have the attraction it used to.

I can see Terry departing by the end of this year, if not sooner. Crying or Very sad

If I had to choose, I'd rather see Danny Baker than Chris Evans or Chris Tarrant replacing him, though.

Iain has no evidence to back up his claim, as we all know some of his posts are either made up or talking about someone who has died.
