Some of you are screaming for Danny Baker presence on Radio 2. I have decided that he will be welcomed to the network in the very near future. He is trying to chisel himself into the network in a different type of way.
Welcome soon too DB?

'I' have decided??
You are Lesley Douglas and I claim my £5 !
Check the new 'All Day Breakfast Show' podcast out Mark. Peter Kay, Tiny Tim and David Kuo - all in the same show! LD should just transmit this! Prefereably in one of Dermot or Dutta's hours! _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew...

That's nice of you Mark. I feel better now.
Personally I don't like Baker in anything more than small doses, but I'm relieved that you're happy at the prospect.

Know I'm biased, but I think many underestimate how worthy Baker's talents now are for R2 given the bland and often crude alternatives from messrs O'Leary, Brand and Co. that are coming to the network instead.
I'd really urge anyone who han't tried him in the last 15 years to re-appraise. I genuinely think some will be pleasantly surprised. It's like Wogan but fresh and contemporary. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Hmm, not quite...

It's just that in a radio world rapidly filling with unedifying, vacuous, tv orientated mediocrity, Baker shines a light of intelligent, creative, imaginative freshness that holds values true to the medium of radio. Theatre of the mind. Appriase his work now if you don't believe me. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I like the late evening TV show that Baker hosted back in god-knows-when. That was fun - a sort of precurser to the J.Ross thing on BBC1 but a helluva lot better. I remember one show on which his good friend Rick Wakeman appeared. Truly hilarious (and that's a somewhat over-used word these days!). I never realised until then what a great raconteur Wakeman is.

Danny Baker, Sony award winner, his breakfast show on the old Radio 5 was absolutely brilliant. I've still got his Christmas special with all his regular guests like Danny Kelly,Laurie Saur and Janet Elliss on tape and I dig it out for a listen every December.( Sad I know but I don't believe in Santa any more).
Ella,I remember the show with Rick, resplendant in a long great coat ,he told an hilarious story about smuggling uniforms out of Russia.
Bring Baker to Radio Two..you know it makes sense. _________________ The wheel keeps on turning...

Danny Baker's All Day Breakfast Show podcast - straight in at No.7 in the podcast chart after just one week and hardly any publicity! I'm impressed. Watch out R. Brand! Attention Lesley Douglas!
Where are Evans and Wogan's podcasts in this chart? _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

I have been through the reasons why that particular appointment was never gonna work more times than I care to remember on the R2 board.
Sufficed to say Baker, who many have written off, must be doing something right on the radio now, in 2007, (not 1993 where some people believe he's still broadcasting!) to 'parachute' straight into No.7 in the download charts when others who have podcasts and are on national radio, are nowhere in that top 10. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

So whose Breakfast and Drivetime "Best Bits" podcasts are being constantly plugged on Wonderful Radio Two then?

Three years with falling ratings - now working for London's equivalent of Radio Humberside. Somehow this does not inspire confidence. Is john Noel his agent? _________________ Geddon

Close - Noel Gay!
He chooses to work on BBC London because, as he said to Evans on the double header, they are one of the few stations to allow him creative freedom - thank God!
As we know, he's had meetings with R2 in the past so they evidently want him, but evidently on their terms of formulaic presentation and music.
Only when Lesley has the balls to relax things a little more - as she is already doing with Russell Brand - might we see a signed contract.
I personally suspect the No.7 podcast will inspire her confidence in his popularity. _________________ Who Can Take A Sunrise, Sprinkle It With Dew... |

Personally, I wouldn't put Russell Brand up as a shining example of quality radio. If this is the level we are to expect if DB comes to R2 then Heaven help us. As for artistic freedom - Wright is free to be annoying and Evans is free to be Very annoying. I'll be free to listen even less should DB make the leap from local to national radio. _________________ Geddon

Put my name on the list as well, BGW. I find DB slightly less annoying than the other idiots, because I actually respect his musical knowledge, but I wish he'd calm down a bit sometimes.
BTW - I'm actually listening to WAVE FM here in Marbella at the moment. There's hardly any talk at all, and the mix of music is actually pretty good most of the time. The other day they did a 60s special (don't they all?) but the music selected wasn't the usual same old standards compiled by someone who was never there. We heard some stuff that we hadn't heard for years - much like SOTS, in fact (still the best 60s orientated radio programme on the planet by a long mile!).
The weather's lovely here today. We'll be taking a stroll into the Plaza de Los Naranjas later for a little drinkie and a bite to eat. Back home after Easter, alas. Oh well...
