Sir Michael Lyons, a former council chief executive and market trader, has been named the new chairman of the BBC.
The 57-year-old will take the helm of the BBC Trust, replacing Michael Grade, who left for ITV last November.
Sir Michael said it was a "great privilege" to be the first chairman of the Trust, which the government created to be "the licence fee payer's voice".
He said he would not lose sight of the public's "expectations of editorial independence and quality programmes".

I'd prefer to see someone who had a lifelong experience in broadcasting, and who understood completely the needs of those who produce programming. Looks like a "grey suit" who's prepared to compromise to me. I pity the BBC. He doesn't look like another gutsy Hugh Carlton Greene to me.

The role is a lot different from the previous job of BBC Chairman. It is very hands off crporate goverance and really just about ensuring that the operational management do what they said they would. He wont have any remit to formulate policy and strategy for the BBC. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

He's one of Tony's cronies.[/quote]
Correction - he's one of Gordon's gophers.
No matter - he has all the appearances of a grey-suit money man who will preside over cost-cutting in all areas except top salaries. When it comes to the crunch he will no doubt look after No 1 first, the government of the day second and the BBC after that.
However, if all that, together with the admission that he watches little tv and is a Radio 4 man, means that we shall see less profligacy by way of the contracts given to the likes of Woss or Norton or Evans to provide us with trash tv or radio, he may not be all that bad. _________________ Ron |
