The 15 Royal Navy personnel held captive by Iran are to be allowed to sell their stories to the media.

The Ministry of Defence said their experiences amounted to "exceptional circumstances" that allowed its usual ban on such payments to be lifted.

====================================

Do you think this is right? These guys are going to get £20k or thereabouts from the Sun & the Mirror just for telling their stories.

Seeing as the average squaddie earns about £15k-£20k per year I can see a few more of them straying into Iranian waters after this gets out Laughing

Maybe I'm cynical, but is this why the female member of the group has not appeared on TV so far, has she already sold her story to the News of the World for a bit more than 20k.....

Wonder if their stories will include the following momentous decision..."Name, Rank, Serial number...Naaa, blow that - lets capitulate to everything so we can get out of here quickly..."

Shame on you.

This is how the world is now cheque book journalism. We will never know what really went on, whether is was the Iranians trying to get themselves back onto the map, or they are trying to make a quick few quid? It does seem like a media circus on both parts. Also I feel it's like the MOD are holding the government to count trying to get more money from them.

I suppose they have made money from this and don't even need to be in the force anymore.

Oh look, I was right, except it's the Sun she has gone to. Oh, and her knickers get a mention on the front page Cool

They are not all doing it. I saw the smart lieutenant on BBC yesterday saying he can't wait to get back on duty in Iraq Exclamation

How pathetic it makes the whole lot of them look, I believe one of them will not sell his story, so well done to him.

Iran missed a trick that would no doubt have captured the British imagination.....

they should have staged "I'm a captive get me out of here" live on the six-o'clock news every night......with a text number to save each of the prisoners....... who gets released tonight?.... you decide!

There is talk of 6 figure sums Shocked , personally I don't think it should be allowed.

You can't blame the individuals for doing it if the money is being handed out but what about all the others out there doing their duty, and not getting captured, or the injured ones who always appear get a poor deal when they get back home, maybe the money should go in a fund for them.

Well I couldn't understand why they were allowed to sell their story, and now there has been a very sharp U-turn, what a fiasco! Makes you wonder what really happened Confused

A quote from BBC NEWS:
=====================
Meanwhile Arthur Batchelor, 20, the youngest of the British sailors to be held captive, told the Daily Mirror about his "nightmare" at the hands of his captors and how he "cried like a baby" in his cell.
====================
Maybe they were turning out to be a bit of an embarrasment. They might have been hoping for stories like Bravo Two-Zero and instead they got this Rolling Eyes

Sunday: Sailors are given permission to sell stories.

Monday: Permission is withdrawn, too late to stop two participants.

Another day, another brick in the wall of farce which the running of our country has become.

Ian.

The whole thing is/was a disaster. as I understand it it was only the Royal Navy that allowed it. The Army Marines were not allowed to tell their stories. I thought it was all a propaganda ploy by the Government but it looks like they did not know what was going on (as usual). Finally the upset it caused to the families of those poor medics that were killed on the same day.
I felt a sense of pride seeing how these service personnel had behaved in Iran but now...for some...Shame?

It has just left a bad taste.

Highlander, I really don't feel any pride for them. They capitulated too quickly. How are troops trained these days when faced with enemy capture? Anyone know?

I would have felt more pride if they'd said - stuff you, Johnny foreigner, we're British and all you get is Name, Rank, Serial no. I believe they've made Britain look weak and when it comes to Iran, Iraq, etc - we can't afford that.
