At least 31 people have been killed and 10 injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech university in Virginia, US.

Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building.

I'm sure Congress never believed this sort of thing would happen when the Second and Ninth Amendments were drafted and ratified.

The president can condem all he wants. He should try to stop this happening regarding the gun laws.

Hello, Gus.
Are you going to be another poster that has a go at Mark for posting news here?

I don't think some of you get what this part of the forum is for

Did you see Bush's statement. It just sounded so pat and rehearsed - do you remember Reagan, he would have said it with so much more compassion and meaning (yes, he was an actor but he was sincere).

Another sad day for America, sort your gun culture out though.

While the National Rifle Association dictates gun policy, there will be more killings.

Mark,

Keep it up. I normally check the forum before I check the BBC news site so this is sometimes my first chance to see what is going on in the world.

I do think we're following America's lead though, gun crime is on the up in this country and getting more frequent. Quite sad and not a little scary.

I can't see the USA ever changing its gun laws - the so-called 'freedom to bear arms' is too deeply enshrined in their constitution and culture for it to be done, despite the fact that the Second actually called for a 'militia' who can bear arms, not the general population. As it was written, the Second was never intended to allow everyone to carry firearms.

Some states do have tighter gun sale laws but there's very little to stop intra-state trading taking place, therefore these laws can be circumvented.

Incidentally, Mark, keep posting stuff - I rarely visit the news websites anyway and this forum is often the first place I hear about stuff.

Before this tragedy, the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 was regarded as the most infamous and shocking gun attacks in American schools. Now this has surpassed it for both scale and horror.

Apparently, Police SWAT teams regularily visit schools to teach students how to react to a shooting.

How the world changes, in my day we may have had a few scuff fights but mow it's knives and guns. Sad

Keep up the good work, Mark.
It's good to get several perspectives on the day's happenings.

The student who shot dead at least 30 people at Virginia Tech sent a package to the US TV network NBC News on the day of the shootings, police said.
