Relatives of a three-year-old girl who is feared abducted on a family holiday are flying to the Algarve in Portugal as the search for her continues.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is terrible news for any family. People on the JV show ( Friday ) complaining the family left her alone asleep in the room wont help them at this time. I hope nothing tragic has happened, and I'm sure all our prays are with them at this time.

What can anybody say other than it is awful? The radio & TV has been full of it since lunchtime and there is nothing that anybody else can do.

So what if it's old'ish, it's not doing any harm discussing it today or over the next few days, as I would expect this will be a big story over the coming weekend if they havn't found her?

No, Mark, it won't, but when I heard this bit on the radio, my first thoughts were "why did you leave her alone by herself - she's only three?"

I can't understand the actions of some parents nowadays. When I was that age, I wasn't allowed out of sight of my parents or grandparents and I was never left in the house by myself.

The little girl doesn't deserve anything bad happening to her, but the parents have had a wake-up call in the worst way imaginable. Hopefully they'll get her back, and when they do, they'll change their ways.

I really don't know what to say about all this. There's an arial photo of the hotel complex in today's Telegraph - the parents were 200 yards away, just round the pool basically, in a Tapas bar.

They apparently looked in on the kids every 30 mins.

I really feel for them, who would have thought this could happen - I have no comment really except my thoughts are with the family and I hope, hope, hope the little girl is returned safe and well.

Very sad story but I'd still say 3 is too young to have left her alone at all.

Even the grandparents were on the news tonight, saying that there was nothing wrong with the parents being 200 yards away, words to the effect of "well, she was asleep, where was the harm in it?".

Words fail me....

Whilst we here pray that she is alright, as parents and grandparents, we would not have left any of our kids in another building, checking on them every 30mins. We know a lot can happen in half an hour.

The girl should have been left with her grandparents. I have a great-niece the same age and her mum would never be as irresponsible as this girl's parents seem to be.

I don't want to put the boot in when the parents must be distraught. But really you just can't leave a child of three like this, even with frequent checks.

Whatever our view, we must all hope for a happy resolution.

Shame on all you 'holier than thou' and smug people - let's show empathy to these distraught parents. If they'd have left Maddy with a child carer for the evening, and she'd been abducted by her, we'd all be saying Maddy shouldn't have been left with a person not very well known by the family. Let's save our vitriol for the person/persons who have abducted the child, and let's pray that Maddy will eventually be found safe and well. Of course the parents will feel tremendously guilty, but let's not keep heaping more and more guilt on them, they've got enough to contend with. It's as if people are saying it's all the parents fault, let's blame them. Let's look at our own shortcomings before castigating other people.

I don't think anyone here is behaving in a holier than thou way or being smug about it.
If you bother to read the posts you will find everyone wishes for the little girl to be found safe and well but some suggest that 3 years old is perhaps a little young to leave a child alone, I have to say I agree but I'm not trying to blame the parents, they weren't to know what was going to happen. Crying or Very sad

By the way if you want to shame anyone them shame the British media whose behavoir in my opinion has been disgraceful.

I was only saying what I know millions of others are saying. I'm not smug either, it's extremely sad.

I stand by what I put in my earlier post (and well and truly practised what I preached when my children were small, so don't feel that my comments were at all smug) but am prepared to acknowledge that the parents have paid a disproportionately high price for their actions.

Likewise, Ian, Helen and TTS - I also stand by what I've posted above. I'm not being smug since I would like to see the little girl returned to her family. However, I've already stated that I believe the parents have had a wake-up call in the worst way imaginable. I don't have kids myself, but I do know how I was raised, plus the way my friends and relations who have children look after theirs.

Maybe it is you, kaytee, that has the 'holier than thou' attitude here, unable to offer constructive criticism (albeit after the fact and with hindsight) in case you're labelled as being unsympathetic to the family's plight and that of the little girl. One can make excuses for all sorts of behaviour if you go down that road....

Being sympathetic to their plight doesn't alter my opinion that a three year old shouldn't be left alone, no matter what the circumstances. Judging by the majority of the comments left on this forum, I'm clearly not in the minority. YMMV.

The parents left their THREE toddlers alone in their apartment. It could have been a lot worse for them Shocked

The search 'on the ground' has been called off. The parents can now only rely on some future 'sighting' of a little blonde girl, or some CCTV in a town etc.

A detailed search is under way at a villa 150 yards from the apartment where Madeleine McCann went missing.

Police are reportedly questioning more than one person, but no-one has been arrested following the search in Praia da Luz, Portugal.

I said to my missus today that the whole thing might be a scam, the parents (or the dad) has schemed with some friends to 'kidnap' the child, get the world sympathy and rewards coming in, and another friend will somehow become the person providing information that lead to the child's rescue, collect the rewards which they share, the kidnappers are never found .....

How could I think such a thing?

John,

I was thinking the same. It does all sound like there is money involved or something else, but the family are quite well off. There was no false entry, no intruders.. It doesn't all add up.

I suppose we can all speculate, but know one has been arrested or charged, just questioned.

Sorry kaytee if I upset you with that possible scenario Confused

I've just read too many Poirot and not ruling out anything. The Portuguese police will be doing the same. When they say they have no suspects then EVERYONE is a suspect. Remember how helpful our man in Soham was for a few days.

I really hope the outcome IS a kidnapping, they bottle it, and the little girl is found on the steps of a police station. So Kaytee, instead of stomping off you should just counter my theory with something more likely, like that.

It now seems there is 'not enough evidence' (i.e none) to charge or even arrest this fellow.
So he's had his face slapped across all the papers, his family have been harrased and all for nothing.

It usually turns out to be somebody local or close to the family that is involved. That's not to say the family are aware of who it is. I think its unlikely that the parents would be involved, but obviously the police cant rule any thing out.

Notsohappy Kaytee Crying or Very sad

I think everyone's entitled to their opinions and entitled to air them.

I haven't commented much on this - I think Madeline looks like a lovely child and I really hope this isn't a scam.

I do beleive she is alive, I think we would have discovered her body by now if she wasn't.

I just got a chain email at work originally from Phil Mccan with a picture. Wording goes as follows...

Please read this message and pass it on!!!!!!!!!

As you are aware my niece, Madeleine, is still missing and I am asking everyone I know to send this as a chain letter i.e. you send it to everyone you know and ask them to do the same, as the story is only being covered in Britain, Eire and Portugal. We don't believe that she is in Portugal anymore and need to get her picture and the story across Europe as quickly as possible. Suggestions are welcome.

Phil McCann

If anyone want's me to forward the email to them, leave you're email in a private message for me, cheers.

I find this whole media circus pathetic. I also agree with another mother - a Portuguese woman living on the Algarve whose child went missing a few years ago and never found who asks why such a massive hunt or media campaign was not mounted for her child? She has a good point.

This whole thing is getting ridiculous and the red-top newspapers are just fuelling the whole thing in order benefit their own circulations.

And by the way - how many more reporters do the BBC need in Praia da Luz to spend ages talking to cameras live links back to the UK without actually having anything to say?

Mad.

Fred, thanks Smile , you actually have a point there. Could be the apathetic attitude of Portugese authorities over thistype of crime.

You've got to wonder though, what the action would have been without the pressure of Britain and I guess if the papers (don't read red tops but the Telegraph has had it on front page since the event) keep the profile high, pressure will be higher and promote more action.
