When in these places, ask for chips when they say 'fries'. Then ask for vinegar to go with your chips! Twisted Evil
Well you can have vinegar in Canadian outlets if you want it!

Hi,

The lady I spoke to recently only arranges Midlands Today (TV studio) tours. She gave me the name of another contact who I will call or e-mail soon.

Hi BDG and all,

The TV tours lady at BBC Mailbox suggested I contact Dave Barber at BBC Mailbox studios, Birmingham, and I only got round to writing to him this week. I think this is the same Dave Barber who has been a Radio 2 producer for six years, might even be Head of Specialist Music or some such title, e.g. involved with the Nick Drake docu couple of years ago, so hoping to hear from him next week.

Hi,

I've had a short reply from Dave Barber and basically........... IT'S ON!!!!

We have an invitation to visit the Radio 2 studios at Mailbox, Birmingham!

I wrote to Dave just last week with some blurb about Radio 2 and messageboards and changes in R2 schedule, R2ok, etc etc etc our usual stuff, and finished with:

Quote:
A few of our group want to arrange a get-together and I offered to enquire about a tour of the Mailbox radio studios and am wondering if you could help with that? We know some R2 shows are broadcast/recorded at the Mailbox and wish we could at least have a look at the studios and maybe even drop in during a recording or broadcast. Would any sort of visit to R2 at the Mailbox be possible?

and his reply was

Quote:
John

Yes, I am sure we can sort something out.
Let me know once you have a rough idea of dates, and we will look at
what's happening in the studios.
Best DB

Dave Barber
Head of Specialist Music and Compliance
BBC Radio 2

So I think Dave might arrange a special visit for us, not just a 'there's his chair and microphone' quickie. Let's hope so!

So he's asking for dates. If we wanted to drop in on a live broadcast then I suppose Saturday suits most folk, and is it right Stuart Maconie is live from Birmingham? Other live stuff from Birmingham is Alex and Janice, have to really dedicated if we want to drop in on them Laughing and Dave Barber would likely not be there.

Anyway, dates. Have to be after the holiday period I suppose which could take us into September, which is approaching the 40th celebrations, I wonder what Dave Barber is planning the weekend 29th/30th Sept.?

Let's have your thoughts.

Eh, so, dates?

September? A Saturday? A Sunday? The 40th anniversary weekend?

Anyone NOT keen on those options? Are trains crap at weekends or on Sundays?

Edit: oh look, I got nabbed by my own word replacement facility Laughing

I thought I'd replied on here last night but can't see it??

I'm planning holidays so it will depend on dates that suit everyone else.

A weekend would be easier for me, late Sept / Oct.

A Saturday would be preferable but I can fit in with pretty much any day with a couple of weeks' advance warning.

I should point out that most regional broadcasting centres these days look like any other office environment - desks, chairs and computer screens! Even radio studios are dominated by computer screens, with only mics and a smaller mixing desk than existed in the old days. There's so much hidden-away server technology involved in broadcasting these days that the sparkle has definitely gone.

I'm sure that, for complete newbies, it will still be interesting - but expect your visit to be a bit of an anti-climax where broadcasting technology is concerned.

Yep. All BBC studios are designed to the same technical and operational standard. This is for two reasons: it makes for more cost-effective design and supply, and it also makes it easier for any engineer on the network to diagnose and fix problems in any location. It also means that a presenter can use a different studio for a show (such as Ken Bruce broadcasting from BBC Leeds when he's doing Countdown) and not require significant re-training.

That said, the new studios at BH are a bit more advanced than many of those around the BBC regions (which resemble the set-up in the older Radio 2 studios before they were ripped out last year), but this will also change in time.

Radio studios are worth visiting, providing there's something happening, but if there isn't it's not so much fun.

Well, as far as I am concerned, it's an excuse to meet up with everyone (or at least some of you) - the visit (thanks, John) will be very interesting to this broadcasting newbie whatever the level of technology (unless they're still using paper cups and bits of string, of course!). Smile

I do agree, of course, that it's always a good excuse to meet up and put faces to virtual names.

On the subject of paper cups, there is a BBC "remote" studio that still uses such technology, I do believe!!! Nobody has yet told the systems engineer that the Second World War is over.

Hi,

Dave Barber has got back to me and said any weekend/Saturday visit in September would be fine for our group, even the 40th celeb weekend 29th/30th. There'll be no special programmes, he reckons the schedule that weekend will be the same as usual but each programme will take the opportunity to mention/celebrate/reminisce on the past 40 years.

So maybe 29th September is a good date to seriously consider, and if Stuart is doing a live show then we might be able to have a look, maybe even get on the show, especially if some of us look like we've been listening for 40 years Laughing

That sort of timing would allow us to meet for lunch. In the Mailbox and it's neighbourhood there is the choice ranging from standard Brummie pubs, most with real ale, to some quite classy bars, all do food, and proper restaurants. The Mailbox houses a designer mall with top names like Harvey Nicholls, Armani etc.

http://www.mailboxlife.com/

The more down to earth and massive Bullring is minutes away as is New St Station, Hyatt Hotel, the Jewellery Quarter, Chinatown, the gay district, whatever else you might want to do Razz

Anyway plenty of time to decide. We can carry on communicating on this thread as I don't think there's a calendar or other facility on this forum for meet-up arranging.

If we are settling on 29th September then sadly I won't be able to make it as I am flying out to Singapore that evening en route to Australia for a month.

Enjoy your day.
