Most informed opinion agrees that the FOI Act was a positive move by this Government.

But now an unholy alliance of Labour and Tory MPs has combined to exempt Parliament from its provisions.

How can we have any respect for our MPs if they behave in this manner just because they can?

Who's got what to hide?

Ian.

Labour MP's dodgy cash dealings;
Tory MP's affairs with their secretaries;
Liberal MP's affairs with young men.

We should all write to our Mp and ask him or her how he/she voted in this respect. If they say they voted in favour, then we should tell them we will not be voting for them next time around.

Thing is it looked as if there was only about 6 people in the chamber when they debated it.

Indeed. In any other organisation, a turnout of 22% would be ruled inquorate.

One hopes the House of Lords will scupper this iniquitous measure.

We elect out local councils on not much more of a turnout.

No, what they're most anxious to hide is details of individual MPs' expenses claims Evil or Very Mad .

It was passed by 113 votes to 27.

The official record of Parliamentary business and debates, Hansard, is unaffected.

But I already know how my MP voted--he was in favour of the exemption. And there's not a damned thing that I can do about it for two years or so.

Likewise - MPs are like MoTs - they're only good for the day they're voted for. After that, it's anyone's guess what they'll vote against, for or abstain on until it's time to renew their tenure.
