The famous 19th Century ship the Cutty Sark is "100%" ablaze, the London Fire Brigade has said.
An area around the 138-year-old tea clipper is being evacuated over fear gas cylinders onboard could explode.
Greenwich town centre in south-east London has been closed to traffic and the Docklands Light Railway shut.
The ship is currently closed to visitors while a £25m renovation is carried out. Eight fire engines have been sent to tackle the fire.
Residents living near the ship were expected to be evacuated shortly, Scotland Yard confirmed.
The whole of the Cutty Sark was on fire, the brigade confirmed.
A spokeswoman said "100%" of the vessel was ablaze and confirmed there were cylinders aboard but their contents had not been named.
The conservation work was being carried out as sea salt had accelerated the corrosion of her iron framework.

It seemed to catch out BBC's Breakfast and Snooze24 this morning - they resorted to showing camera phone pictures and said "we'll have more news as we get it".... a euphemism for 'well, we haven't managed to get a reporter on the scene yet' if ever I heard one. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Anyone know if, and for how much, the Cutty Sark was insured for?

The conservation group have stated that all the masts and a lot of the beams are safe, they'd been removed to another place during the work, so it's the shell of the boat and the lower decks that are badly damaged. Whatever they do now in the end it will be > 50% replica. |

Very sorry to hear re this event but the person who asked JV if the death penalty was still in force for setting fire to HM dockyard is going to be disappointed. I think that was abolished some years ago.
In any case, can you imagine the human rights lobby's reaction?

Sounds like another excuse to wheel Shami Chakrabarti into JV's studio for a rant _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

An excuse is needed? I thought Liberty had its own seat in the studio! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Pity they couldn't get one of the 30 outside broadcast crews back from Portugal. _________________ Standing on Ray Moore's shoulders |

Very sad news to me. I heard on the tv this morning they may appeal to the public for donations to restore the hull as well as possible Lottery funding.
Would you pay towards it?
I would... |

News tonight said an anonymous donor had given £100K towards the restoration.... Santa, how rich did you say you were? _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

Passed the RSS Discovery in Dundee today and saw a bunch of blokes, with a couple of Polis watching, installed new CCTV. Guess they don't want to take any chances with copycats _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

Sure they were CCTV cameras and not remote operated flame-throwers? _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |
