I've never quite forgiven Miss Paige for displacing Desmond Carrington on Sunday lunchtimes but I might recommend her for absolution if she plays more tracks like Joyce Grenfell's I'm Going to See You Today and Victoria Wood's sublime Let's Do It, both of which were on yesterday.

This led to a lunch-table discussion about Joyce Grenfell, whom the younger members of our clan don't remember first-hand, of course. Just how do you classify JG? Comedienne, singer, actress, broadcaster, writer, poet--where do you start? Oh, and I forgot about her input into the Pilkington Committee on Broadcasting. She was a national treasure before the term was coined and a complete one-off.

Was she a one-off though? Actually I think Victoria Wood is turning into a latter day Joyce Grenfell.

I listened to Elaine's show for the first time ever last Sunday and I absolutely loved it. I'm a Radio 4 man on a Sunday morning, Archers, Discs and the current, wonderful re-runs of Clue with the late, great Willie Rushton as well as the recently departed Humph, but was driving back home through mid wales where only Radio 2 comes through consistantly.
I really enjoyed the tunes she played, not normally my cup of tea but I found myself singing along in the car (i was by myself - wouldn't inflict my singing on anyone). Add to the fact that she played Harry Chapin's Cats in The Cradle - You're fine by me girl

It was a particularly good one on Sunday. Nice to have a film composer for a change, but it's always good stuff.

Harry Chapin was a very quirky songwriter. 'WOLD', 'Mr Tanner', 'Sniper', etc. are amongst my favourites by him. Johnny Cash did a fine version of 'Cat's in the cradle' too.

Turned on on Sunday, just in time for her interview with Marti Webb, whose performance of Tell Me On A Sunday was one of the best, and simplest, I've ever seen and heard in a musical - they ruined it by adding more songs and changing it, for the revival for Denise van Outen.

We didn't in truth learn much from Marti, but more notable was Elaine corpsing during the diary of amateur productions, after giving a plug to "One Big Blow" - about 49 minutes in on Listen Again. What can she have been thinking about? Wink
