Being of a certain age, I was looking forward to this on Saturday, I must admit I expected something along the lines of Rock and Roll up to psychedelia on the first programme. Rock and Roll was almost ignored and the programme centred on the influences, work and drug habits of Jimi Hendrix. OK, he was one of the most influencial guitarists, but the work of Cream was virtually ignored except for hendrix upstagimg them and the walking off stage.
It's Pink Floyd and Genesis next week, Prog was more than these two groups. _________________ Geddon

I thought it was interesting.... it certainly dispelled the myth of Clapton being some untouchable deity
Was it me, or did Jack Bruce sound a touch bitter about not being recognised for his input during that period? _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

BGW, the programme was entitled "7 ages of Rock" ( a celebration of the music genre with a look at how this particular style emerged ) so I suppose it was as described, rock as opposed to rock & roll.
I enjoyed it; being a very big fan of Hendrix at the time and of course Cream.
We all have different views of the era if around back then, but for me and my pals, Hendrix was the greatest thing going but, I regarded Cream as "Gods" too. I never attempted to favour one above the other, it just wasn't done. There was room for both.
Hendrix excited me enough to desperately want to be in a band, his guitar work and delivery was indeed jaw droppingly fascinating.
I always liked Wild Thing by the Troggs, and we included it in our band's song list, but when I saw Hendrix play it, I couldn't believe it! such power and attitude! total excitement.
Cream too were untouchable imo, Hendrix didn't have a look in on their plane, pure class. In fact, I'd say Clapton ran rings round Hendrix if I'm honest, but he didn't have that rough edge that I admired in Jimi.
I always regarded Jack Bruce as bitter, it comes out in his songs, but why not? he was the best around! again, my opinion of course.
I just wish they would come up with some different clips and interviews, they've been shown to death - particularly the Lulu show!! |
