I'm not in the least bit surprised by this story
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6676345.stm
I will not touch supermarket meat with a 50ft barge pole as I've always felt there is something not right about it. |

I shop at Tesco but a few years ago I stopped buying my joints, sausages and meats there. Not because of any freshness issue but because of value.
You can but a pork joint for about £6 - £7, put it in the oven and the bloody thing shrinks!! I found a really good butcher near me and got a massive pork joint for less than £5. No shrinkage and it was far tastier that Tesco's.
Plus a pound of sausages costs less from my butchers than tesco's and there is more choice.
I also get meat form farmers markets in Hexham- in my view it's a case of everything else at tesco, meat produce, let's go to a proper butcher or help the farmers directly.
Will be very interested in tonight's programme. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

Another programme being hailed as news, but the newas item being used as a trailer. Is it another slow news day? _________________ Geddon

Andy, good recommendations there - I only buy meat from a local butcher too or from farm shops on occasion when I'm out and about. Farmers' markets are good for vegetables, bread, cheese, etc. - sometimes you do have to pay a bit more but I'd rather do that than trust how long stuff has stood on a shelf in Tesco. The new Tesco is already making an impression in Hexham though - you'd do well to support the local traders up in the town, too, if you can. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I too only buy meat from the local butcher, he sells fruit and veg as well so we usually get that from there too.
We have a farmers market once a month which I usually try and get along to. We really only use Tesco for things like cat food, tea bags and washing up liquid, etc |

Makes good television but I don't feel easy about these whistleblower type docs...
I don't think many companies or government or for that matter charities would fare very well if this was to happen to them.
I'd hate a whistleblower to be around me for any length of time. |

After watching that I now wouldn't touch it with a 1,000ft barge pole |

Yeah, you're right I used to get a lot at the green market but I'd always worry about how long it would take me to get it to the fridge / freezer, especially when I'm at work.
Watching the programme I agree with the comment that these are huge money machine supermarkets so surely then can spend more on training / health equipment. _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |
