I've often said in the last few years that if I were half the age that I am and had no family I'd get out of this country tomorrow.

Somebody who contacted JV yesterday did just that by going to New Zealand for two years and came back here only because his visa expired.

He said that in this country he suffered frequent episodes of depression but had none whilst in NZ because he was so well treated over there.

I've known several people who've emigrated there and all have loved it. One great friend has been there for 10 years and, though I still miss him tremendously, I'm so happy for him that he's having such a good life.

Have any of you ever lived in NZ or, for that matter, Australia? Or have you paid a prolonged visit? If so, what did you make of it?

Ian.

Does this count- my sister (aged 40), her husband and her 3 children 7, 4 and 2 years old emigrated to Brisbane, Australia 18 months ago.

They are having a great time-have settled in very well-have got the kids into great schools (education for her children was the no 1 reason for her to go to Australia), have set up a couple of businesses in the tourism industry as well as acquiring the Brisbane Tourist Bus Company etc. They live close to some islands which have fantastic wildlife on/around them etc. Nothing here in the UK she says compares.

Having left the UK they naturally miss their family and friends but have no intentions of returning for exactly the reasons you state in your message-ie how they treatment by locals and the fact that quality of life/living is considerably better than they could experience here in the UK.

My wife and I are planning a prolonged visit to Australia later this year to spend some time with them and to visit some other famous places. I'll let you know what I think when we return!

Just think no messages by me on the subject of Richard Allinson for a while when I'm away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Won't you be suffering from severe 'lack of Richard Allinson' withdrawal symptoms when you go?!!
