Terry Wogan has been censured by the BBC for excessively promoting his UKTV Gold chatshow on his Radio 2 breakfast programme.
The BBC's editorial complaints unit said references to the DJ's chatshow, called Wogan: Now and Then, broke the corporation's producer guidelines on promoting commercial programmes and channels.

It said Wogan and the programme's production team would be reminded of their responsibilities by the Radio 2 controller, Lesley Douglas.

Hmmm. Bound to happen sooner or later, but I suppose it's got to be seen in context: Ken, Johnnie and the TOGs always rein him in when he does it too much.

Why don't they just tell him not to mention it at all then? It's hardly crime of the century is it? I really can't beleive someobody went to all the trouble to complain, don't they know where the off button is? Rolling Eyes

I notice 'they' didn't mind about him plugging his book though but then again Johnnie and Stuart Maconie have both plugged their books too.

Not on their own show! When Stuart's last book came out he had to take a week off, and he even stopped Sally Traffic mentioning it when she was about to praise it.

A little odd given that it's fundamentally a BBC show! All of Wogan's old TV stuff?!?!

Have these ars**oles got nothing better to do?!

Yes, and also it seems that it was ok for radio 2 to plug N Power when comic relief was on and also for the BBC to advertise the Chelsea flower show sponsored by Saga. Rolling Eyes

Isn't UKTV Gold and the others a BBC joint venture?

Good to learn Terry Wogan has been given a reminder about "his responsibilties"-in any other business environment he would have been dealt with much more harshly-the sack maybe.

Just because he has been on Radio 2 for 100 years does not give him licence to take liberties does it.

He is the networks biggest star. Like him or not, that gives him some latitude.

Self promotion is not a good idea is it in front of 8 million listeners.

Just because Terry has a TV show he should not be promoting it so blatently on his watch.

That's what the recent independent reports on the BBC are driving at.

Yes but people email him to insult his performance on the shows. Thats why he keeps mentioning them. It self-deprecation.

Thing is he never pre reads the emails, he just gets given them in print-outs and he reads them 'cold'

Notice it was only the UK Gold program he was told off about, they didn't mind about him plugging his book.

Is this really true Ernie.

My impression is that he only reads out e-mails from a certain group of regular e-mailers to his show-a tight group not bigger than a few dozen.

None of this particular group are going to criticise him in any shape or form are they because they would not get their regular mention on radio from him if they did-indeed what DJ/presenter would read out any negative e-mails sent to them-nobody in short.

Yes it is now looking like that. I think there is a lot of people who post on these boards send him emails, but he gets to know them so he wont read them out. I always thought the BBC were there to cater for everyone, it's ok him critising Auntie, but hey not us who pay his wages.. I think Commercial radio has hurt the BBC and the listeners know this and try and tell the BBC in there own way.
