Salaries paid to the BBC's big stars are to be examined by the corporation's governing body, the BBC Trust.

The review, which will be announced in July, comes after "top talent" pay was leaked, including a three-year-deal for Jonthan Ross worth a reported £18m.

Its wont only be Ross. Michael Foster who is Chris Evans agent is also pretty good at wringing money out of the Beeb. As is Wogans!

Only to be expected, now that we have an economist, and one of Gordon Brown's mates, at the head of the BBC.

I'm all in favour, except that these things have a habit of affecting the wrong targets. There's nothing they can do about the ludicrous amounts they have felt it necessary to keep the talents (thought long and hard about inverted commas there) of J Ross and G Norton, or C Evans and R Brand on radio. However, there is a long history of ITV and C4 poaching promising young talent, both in front of and behind the camera/microphone, by waving their (or their sponsor's) chequebook, and tieing the hands that hold the purse-strings is likely to encourage more of that.

R2 had to raid every budget possible in order to fund Chris Evans's first year contract. Programmes were axed, production staff freelance contracts were terminated early and indie production companies (even Johnnie's own) were told their commission contracts were being terminated after only a few weeks, too. In JW's case his company had just signed a lease on offices, hired people and committed to expenditure - and when Ms. D cancelled the contract after two or three programmes (documentaries) they had to lay off staff and their company had to be would up.

Everything comes at a price and lots of people at or associated with R2 have paid it one way or another.

Well a few thoughts on this.
Firstly Evans is not the only high price star on Radio 2. Wogan, Wright & Ross are more expensive if the leaked information is to be believed.

Secondly an organisation has to succession plan. Its obvious that Evans is being groomed for breakfast over a 3 year period. And its equally clear that he is one of the few who would realistically be up to it. And dont give me all this nonsense about putting Allinson or Lester or some other virtual unknown on breakfast. It just wouldnt work in the real world.

Thirdly what right has Walker to automatically get shows comissioned. His early Sunday show efforts were a work of massive self obsessed delusion. I'm sure somebody had to step in and resolve the mess that show was in & this is hardly unconnected with the lack of further comissions.

According to one report Steve Wright takes £440,000 home per annum. Which is less than Evans, so may I correct what I said earlier. Still its not bad for doing the same old show for the last 20 years.

Doesn't he have to pay the Janey, Tims and old womens wages? Tim still needs to earn covering for radio 2 presenters and earns her dosh on TV? I think they are all well off.

That's not the point - and I wasn't referring to Drivetime (if you read my post you'd see that). The point is that the Controller put out commissions for a whole series and gave assurances that there was also a possibility of a follow-on series. Then, suddenly, Ms Douglas panicked because not only did she allegedly renege on Johnnie Walker after inviting him to do Drivetime for another 12 months (2 weeks after they agreed this) but she then told him and his production-company partner that their contract to supply a documentary series was dropped as well - just after they'd committed to resources for its making. They'd got only two programmes of a whole series worth in the can. That's really bad business management .

And all because.......... she had to raid the coffers to find the money to pay for Gingernut and rumour has it that the senior management weren't altogether in favour of it either.

Not what I was saying. I said that Ms. D went into blind panic mode and had to raid budgets in order to fund Evans's appointment because the higher echelons of BBC Radio wouldn't put up additional cash. As a result, lots of people on either side of the mic were dumped on from a great height.

I'm just stating facts, that's all, and I think the results of this are evident in the quality of the output (which, for me at least, has degraded).
