Russell Brand is to be this year's interviewee at the Radio Festival in Cambridge.

Brand's turn as celebrity interviewee follows those of veteran DJ Tony Blackburn last year and Chris Evans in 2005.

Best known as the host of the Big Brother discussion show Big Brother's Big Mouth, which he has now left, Brand established himself a DJ on the BBC's 6Music station.

His Sunday morning show became a popular download and he transferred to Radio 2 last November, taking Bob Harris's slot on Saturday nights between 9pm and 11pm.

The festival, organized by the Radio Academy, will play host to the radio industry's leading lights in a series of speeches, debates and seminars.

Speakers include the BBC's director of radio, Jenny Abramsky, the GCap Media chief executive, Ralph Bernard, and the Channel 4 chief executive, Andy Duncan.

Presenters Vanessa Feltz, Martha Kearney and Jamie Theakston will discuss whether radio has become too reliant on TV talent.

There will also be insights on "talent management" from the world of football from former England manager Graham Taylor and ex-footballer Mark Bright.

Whoever wins the battle for the second national digital radio multiplex licence - either Channel 4 or National Grid Wireless - will outline its plan for the new service.

Ofcom's decision is due on July 6, three days before the festival gets under way on July 9.

Andrew Harrison, the chief executive of the Radio Centre, the body that represents the commercial sector, will deliver a keynote speech.

The festival will open with a debate sponsored by GMG Radio and chaired by Today presenter Ed Stourton on the motion "This house believes regulation is strangling radio."

The Ofcom chief executive, Ed Richards, will talk about the watchdog's consultation on the future of radio and the alignment of analogue and digital regulation.

The festival takes place at Cambridge University between July 9 and July 11, and will be hosted by Radio 2 DJ Jeremy Vine.
