How come you can put pairs of socks into the washing machine but get odd socks out?
Ian. |

Well funny that you ask that Ian because I'm just in the middle of what I hope to be the definitive work on that very question.
Initial theories suggest that two socks go into the machine but during the spin cycle one of the socks becomes "stuck" ( for want of a better description) to the drum. At the end of the spin cycle, all of the clothes in the drum flop in thwumping soggy lump kind of way to the bottom of the drum but not your sock. Oh no, it just stays there stuck to the outside of the drum at the 12 o'clock position, out of view. So when you take out the washing from the bottom of the drum, one sock remains in the washing machine. You then, because like me, you're not very organised either hang the washing( randomly- not matching socks as you go) out or pop it into the drier. (Fatal) Then when it's all dry you take it upstairs to put it away. Days later you get around to sorting out what belongs to who and put it all away. It's then you notice , the extra sock, or the missing sock, which ever way you prefer to look at it. If you're of the extra sock mentality then you throw it away, what use is one sock? If you're of the missing sock mentality , you assume that the missing sock has blown away while it was hung out or has been eaten by the tumble drier, so you throw away the extra sock, what use is one sock? Next time you use the washing machine the "stuck" sock becomes unstuck and the whole process starts again.
BTW if anyone is thinking what is thread about .... it's about Socks. PJ won a pair this morning on the Odd Couple comp |

Yes, it's a common problem which I can identify with, as o/c washing machine in the house.
Trouble is, I swear I don't throw any odd ones out, and the machine is completely empty now, but I cannot fathom why there are eleven odd socks now in the airing cupboard awaiting their mates.
Congrats to PJ, by the way _________________ Ron |

Yes, congratulations, PJ - start winning Mo's Saturday quiz and you'll be well on your way to your own R2 wardrobe! _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”
