On Saturday I dipped into Mark Lamarr's show--a change from when Jonathan Ross presents it, when I usually can hardly get to the off switch quick enough!

They were discussing sightings of celebrities and I thought we could continue it here.

So whom have you seen, by chance rather than arrangement?

Way back in the 60s I saw Bamber Gascoigne walking the City Walls in Chester. It was definitely him, for he was talking to his companion and you couldn't mistake that voice.

Around the same time, I saw the three members of Scaffold getting on to a train at Liverpool Exchange Station.

More recently I saw Keith Chegwin at Toddington Services on the M1.

Like many who live in this locality, I've seen our former TV legend Mike Neville a time or two.

Over to you.

Ian.

Nearly bumped into Anton du Beke accidentally, near Leicester Square one day last autumn.

Keith Barron once stopped me in the street asking for directions to the Theatre Royal in Nottingham (we were about 50 yards away from it).

However my most memorable brush with celebrity was with Brian Clough, in a newsagent's the Monday morning after Forest had lost the FA Cup Final to Spurs in 1991. I was somewhat taken aback but managed to come out with "Bad luck about Saturday" to which I got an "Aye, well, never mind" and I beat a hasty retreat.

I was once next to Barry Manilow on a bus at LA Airport. He was wearing lots of make-up, and seemed quite cosy with his young male "assistant."

Flying back from LA, I was at the next check-in desk to MC Hammer. He was wearing baggy pants.

I once said hello to a man I recognised, only to be told he was one of "The Bill" stars at the time. He was polite enough to say hello back to me.
When I was a little kid Oliver Reed trod on my foot in Oxford Street. He didn't say hello.

About 2 years ago I was checking into a hotel in Central London and standing right next to me also checking in was Alan Shearer.

I actually said hello to him and we had about a 1 minute chat on football.

At the time I was very excited that he actually bothered to engage me. I remember him being very polite and friendly.

What do you think? I was probably too young to understand what he said.
As for MM I misread that as Shergar, blimey!

Met Patrick Moore (astronomer) in the Student Union building Edinburgh, must have been about 1972. He had a handicapped child with him, giving him a treat of dinner in the academic surroundings (it was a men only building at that time).

I've seen Prince Charles from across the street in London- he was doing a building opening or some such as I happened to walk past- he's quite tall.

Saw Barry Norman coming the other way as I was going up Wardour St. I smiled and nodded and he said hello- he's REALLY tall!

Saw Mickey Dolenz trying to snuggle up to a cute blonde lass in a doorway of some offices in the West-End.

Dave Murray (Iron Maiden guitarist) came into the elecrical shop I worked in in North London with his girlfriend, and tried to rent a telly. He'd only been in his new place a couple of weeks and the company wouldn't let him have one, despite me telling them he was certainly good for the money Laughing

My top 3 all happened in the old Marquee club.

1. Was at a Magnum gig, spending the time trying to chat up the barmaid, and Fish (or Derek Dick to give him his real name) of Marillion was at t'other end of the bar. We ended up chatting and buying each other pints all night. Really nice guy and INCREDIBLY tall!

2. Paul Di'Anno ex-Iron Maiden- He was on stage with his new band, Lone Wolf. My mate and I were at the front and started chatting to him between songs. He was really friendly, considering he was in the middle of a gig, and we went on all the way through- he's got a great sense of humour- diamond geezer!

3. Was at a gig (can't remember who), the bar was heaving. The week before we'd seen ex-Maiden guitarist Den Stratton's new band Lionheart and thought they were great. Who should walk in but Den himself.
For some unknown reason, I raised a hand and shouted out "Hiya Den!"
He forced his way through a mass of bodies-bearing in mind he didn't know me from Adam- and came over for an easy-going chat lasting about 10 minutes... Now that's a star imo Cool

PS: no idea why Iron Maiden feature so heavily in my star-spotting Confused

The late Jon Pertwee at Popham airfield back in 1981, which was the time he played 'Wurzel Gummidge' in the TV series.

Not sure if he counts as a celebrity as such but I used to see Terry waite a lot as he was staying in Cambridge while writing his book. He was always polite and said hello, a nice man.

Also occasionally saw the late Syd Barratt (pink Floyd) riding his bike, once saw him in John Lewis with his sister too.

When I was a kid I used to imagine that London was chock-full of celebs and I'd see them everywhere. I was very disappointed on my first trip!

Ah well - on my last one, I (almost literally) bumped into Sky News' Adam Boulton, and was sat near former Doctor Who companion Nicola Bryant (Peri) in the theatre.

TTS: Syd? Wow, wait till I tell my brother who lives in Cape Town, that a mortal saw him. We all thought he was dead in 1973.
He will dine out on that for years.
Did his bike have a basket and a bell that rings and things to make it look good?

Sylvestor McCoy was in Newcastle, in the comedy 'Arsenic and old lace' which I went to see. The lunchtime before the show I was walking into WHSmith at the central station, sylvestor in his hat was walking out.

I held the door for him, he said thanks and I said see you at the show tonight and we had a chat about that.

Just before the show, we went for something to eat and low and behold we were at the table next to Sylvestor and the other actors. He recognised me and said hello again...as they all downed their third vodkas!!

I'm always bumping into them - I reckon they're following ME around!

Amongst the best was at Stonehenge in 1980. I was invited to join the Druids' 'Feast' by a Druid who turned out to be William Roache (Ken Barlow)! Mr. Green

He's large enough anyway. I remember seeing him, Michael Brunson & Robin Oakley together waddling down from Dowing Street to the Palace of Westminster together a few years back. They all looked pretty well fed TBH.

Ha! That's exactly what I thought - it was teatime and I took his hurried pace to mean he was late for a slap-up tea...

I've seen Gordon Brown!

But that was in 1972 when he was the Rector at Edinburgh Uni. In fact he was a student Rector, the first student to be so if I recall correctly.

Brown took office following the resignation of Malcom Muggeridge. 'Bugger Mugger' refused to stay on after it was announced that contraceptives would go on sale in University toilets Razz

I'd say he was more interested even then in endogenous growth theory than he was in other human beings. Laughing
