I was listening to Richard Allinson earlier today and whilst he was reading out the global weather forecast his reading was suddenly interrrupted twice by music interuptions-he suddendly referred to them by advising someone is submitting "fader starts" on me and that he was going to get very annoyed with this.
His annoyance was clearly referring to technical issues-any body out there who can enlighten me re the term "fader starts"-what exactly does this term mean/what is he referring to exactly. Thanks in anticipation. |

Yes I have heard this happen on Londons Magic a few times. Instead of using a clock to back time themselves it cuts there talk time and the music will automatically start. It's mainly used for recorded shows or commercial radio with adverts.
So he will have to cut his links. |

Thanks Mark O-Richard was clearly getting really annoyed yesterday about this concluding his rant by saying "saying someone has been at my desk before me messing about when they shouldn't have been". |

Why does BFBS need to stick to exact timing? Is there news on the hour or opt outs?
He could always do a Ms Kennedy & chop the song off half way through to hit the pips? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm sure they do as they broadcast around the world and need to keep to timings for the hourly news.
I'm sure Richard wouldn't want to crash the pips on BFBS and moan about them like he does when covering for Sarah and Terry on Radio 2. Thats totally unproffesional to do that on BFBS |

Yeah, I know if I was stuck in Iraq, fighting insurgents, surrounded by suicide car bombers and not knowing who to trust, I'd be really annoyed if Reeling In The Years crashed the pips... |

No pips on BFBS but they do have hourly news bulletins. |

A fader-start is an activated fade which occurs thanks to a tiny microswitch being installed at the beginning of a fader's travel on the sound mixer. This switches on the device appropriate to that fader channel (eg CD player, MD player, MP3 file on playout server etc) as soon as the fader is moved forward a fraction. Because the "master" level limiter for that channel is set either on the presenter's mixer desk or on the mixer in the control room, the presenter can throw the fader up very quickly. If there's a fault on the fader start it could mean that it either kicks in too quickly or too late.
I'm not quite sure what you're talking about in relation to RA ( I don't listen to BFBC) but I think the studio equipment they're using isn't quite up to date in the way as are the new computer-server systems at the new BH are. I think they're similar to those used in the old R2 studios (given that the majority of BFBC technical staff are ex-BBC anyhow and use the same standards).

That has nothing to do with fader starts - that is more likely to be connected with the automated playout system used by many radio stations which leaves a precise gap (eg: 30 secs) for "live speech" amid a pre-programmed running order containing all the usual dross we hear on most radio stations these days. If a presenter doesn't time his/her piece properly the next item in the sequence will automatically kick in. |
