Thank you for spotting that TTS - I broadly agree with what he says about our favourite morning presenters, although I do bridle a little at the obsession with class.
Why is it that anybody who speaks clearly and intelligibly is always assumed to be, or labelled, middle or upper class?

Radio 1 is the network for screeching hideous awful estuary English accents.
Unfortunately the likes of Steve Lamaq are now being offered jobs on Radio 2.

Well, I haven't minded Lamacq's accent on the rare occasions he sits in for Bob Harris - he's knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the music he plays too, which must be mitigating circumstances as far as I am concerned.

| I found the article intresting but I'm also very slightly annoyed about his references to 'class' Having said that I thought it was a well written piece. |

Read this article and simply put imho what a load of old bo..ocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The sooner this old guard (the collective 3 ) are let go (with dignity?) the better.
Radio 2 needs to look to the future and the 3 dinosaurs mentioned in this article are certainly not the future. |

I doubt he would attract as many listeners as these, face it, they are there because they are popular and people like them so tough.

He does make the point that always bothers me, that Bruce now sounds so much like Wogan. Ken's accent is, sorry WAS, identical to mine, but now with all the same mannerisms in speech he just sounds like Wogan.
When I was younger (young Scot moved to England) I was always in an odd situation. When I began meeting English people in important jobs/positions the first sound of my Scottish accent made them think something like 'oh he's not middle class' and I'd be ignored after a few Scotty jokes, but once I got into conversation and made my knowledge/experience speak they'd then get very defensive and it was always the case that I'd have to try hard to get myself accepted. Not a problem now as I'm older, I guess, or there is less of a provincial/class thing nowadays, indeed those experiences I had, I suppose, were NOT actually a problem but a useful challenge that made me try harder to get 'noticed' and 'accepted' and recognised for what I could offer.
Did Gordon Brown have the same problem in England?

He seems to have missed the Radio 2 gear change at 12 noon. He seems very fond of Janice Long too and ne'er a mention for Alex Lester. Maybe he only sleeps between 3 & 6

Not sure I agree wholly with that. The spirit of Ken's show, or rather the interaction with the audience, is very similar but the delivery is quite different.
As to the accent, unless one makes a conscious effort, living and working or socialising with people outside of your home turf inevitably takes the edge off it, and can make it disappear completely. My mother was born and bred in Falkirk but has lived in England since just before marrying in 1950 and has lost all her Scottish-ness (forgive me) except when talking on the phone to her sister. Gordon Brown has all but lost his.
Many people on the radio and TV (still) get complaints if their accent is too broad, and tone it down as a result - I remember Sally Magnusson getting such flak, Andy and Liz Kershaw in their early days, and more recently the presenter of Coast, Neil Oliver, has got the folk on the PoV MB going.

"Estuary English" has, a little unfairly, been applied solely to refer to the residents of London and bordering counties (the Thames river and estuary), whose slovely speech - the glottal stops, dropped H's and endings of words etc - grates on the ear. There are equally infuriating cases of this all over the UK - Mersey, Trent and Clyde to name just three.
I don't care what accent someone has, so long as they speak clearly and can be easily understood. I've only caught Steve Lamacq's show the once but he seemed perfectly fine.

I can understand Neil Oliver just fine. I'll admit, I wasn't too sure about him when I first saw him on telly - years ago on some doc about Culloden, but his style and enthusiasm has grown on me. Plus, anyone who goes to Orkney and loves the place is fine by me.
(If you watch the "Coast" episode on Orkney and watch as the helicopter flies past the Brough of Birsay, you'll actually see me standing on the clifftop! I've even got a photo of the helo flying by. Blink and you'll miss me, though! )

I must admit I wasn't too sure about him taking the main presenting role from Nick Crane but he has really grown on me too.
It's great to see someone so obviously interested in the subject and enjoying doing it too.
I think the Orkney program was the first of this series wasn't it? or am I thinking of something else?
We see to have gone rather off topic, lol  |

Hear! Hear! on all four counts!
1. It's almost a shame that he can't redo the earlier series, since I wasn't that keen on Map Man (who's filming a new series of Great British Journeys, to be screened this autumn).
2. Yes. I know you can't compare them, but a bit like Bill Oddie.
