Well the lovely Lesley has done it again!! Russell Brand - too childish for Radio 1.
What does she do?? Put him on Radio 2!!

What is Radio 2 coming to? What age group is she aiming at? First Chris Evans and now this!! What next?

Not heard him on Radio but i have had the misfortune to sit through some Big Brother nonsense he was presenting once.
He just came across as a poor Kenneth Williams impersonator.
So full of himself that after 10 minutes i had to leave the room to finish the pots.
Never listened and never will

I've very much enjoyed his shows so far, although I missed the last one. I find him refreshingly different, hilariously funny, and a real breath of fresh air.

As someone's already said in this thread - first Chris Evans, and now Russell Brand! Nice one, Radio Two - two exceptional talents on the same station - thumbs up from this listener.

BTW his CH4 TV show is warmly recommended for those who have heard and enjoyed his radio shows.

LG, exactly how would you sum up the 'exceptional talent' that RB has displayed on his Saturday evening show so far?

I'm not having a go at you here, just interested to find out how your perception differs from mine so wildly.

Well bully for you. I think the guy's an idiot, and very boring. Certainly not hilariously funny, and I can't imagine how you arrive at that conclusion. Still, each to his own.

He most certainly doesn't belong on Saturday nights; return them to the music lovers. Russell Brand should be on a weeknight slot instead, maybe Thursdays 10pm - midnight. Lesley Douglas seems to allocate weird slots to presenters sometimes.

Can't say I've ever listened to Elaine Paige on R2, Scott, therefore couldn't tell if she was weird or not. I take it you believe she is?

No worries .. I find him very witty, in a caustic and idiosyncratic sort of way, and his off -the-wall, spontaneous manner is very pleasing and engaging. I think he brings out the best in the people he interviews as well, by moving away from standard interviewer territory onto fresh ground - the dialogue with Morrissey was hilarious. He's different, very charismatic, and very funny.

Certainly not the sort of thing that will appeal to everyone, and probably not the typical traditional R2 listener to be fair - but that's not to say that he's generally unfunny, or an "idiot" - these are plainly silly remarks.

An interesting concept, perhaps all the more so because you've made it up yourself! I made no such insinuation.

Sorry, but your notion that Russell Brand is an idiot just doesn't wash, so your concept, while undoubtedly highly interesting to you, has no validity or interest in the real world, I'm afraid.

Russ has got a bit of a following in my house, I don't know why. I don't neccessarily think he's hot or even funny come to that. It's horses for courses I suppose.
In a few years time when Ch 4, decide to air one of those '100 Best Radio DJ's' - as they inevitably will, when they run out of 100 other things> I doubt he'll be up there with the likes of John Peel, etc.
Also, having seen those pics he has posted on the BBC website <him in his little white pants> I suspect he might be a laugh in bed for all the wrong reasons Shocked

Doesn't prevent me from thinking that Russell Brand is an idiot, whatever you say or think. I'd certainly use the term as featured in the thread title. Is the real world not made up of individuals each of whom have their own views? Correct. And I am one of them. Smile

The acid test for those sorts of programmes is to see who they get to interview for comment - the subject's peers or famous names for the good ones, unknown journalists and dodgy website owners for those listed when (as you say) the producers run out of ideas. I can't see any of RB's current peers on R2 lining up to support him much, although you never can tell.

I did like the C4 trailer for "30 Greatest Political Comedies", though - I bet they were really scratching their heads to get that many! Smile (Spitting Image, Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister, Whoops Apocalypse... and, er, that's it....)

Does anyone get the point of Russell Brand - what's his contribution to the entertainment industry supposed to be? Confused

Which is why I asked LG to expand upon his initial description - I wanted to know why he had completely different views from mine without it developing into a slanging match - which he kindly provided (the explanation, not the slanging match!).

To be fair I don't think Russell Brand will be remembered as a great DJ like Peely; I think he's too much of a generalist for that - he also has a successful career as a TV presenter, and as a comedian. And these days, there's just too much competition for people to carve out a lasting name for themselves in radio - the MP3 player, umpteen TV channels, the Internet and even the mobile phone.

In a good way, he reminds me of the late, great, Kenny Everett - different, unusual, manic; a very distinctive and rare talent, with an unmistakable spark of brilliance.

As someone who spent one's formative years listening to (among other things) Kenny & Cash on Big L out there on the watery waves three miles off Frinton, I've always regarded Cuddly Ken as one of the true innovators and geniuses (genii?) of British radio. Whereas I just think of Brand as a complete w*nk*r! Smile

I would personally argue calling any male that, is in some way factually correct.

Hi,

Had to pop out for 20mins with the missus and we put on Russell Brand in the car.

Ooo err. I don't mind the words 'shagger' and 'effing' on TV at 10.45pm but in the intimate company of a radio I dislike it very much. I will avoid Russell in future.

A wise decision. I have avoided him ever since his stint in Mark Radcliffe's spot much earlier this year. The trailers for his former 6 music show were also enough to deter me from listening any further.

Russell Brand will be appearing on Radio 1 on Wednesday 24 January presenting a show called appropriately enough "No Laughing Matter". No its not his act, but a documentary to see if life as a stand-up comedian is all it's cracked up to be.

So that's 1, 2, 4 and 6 he has been on. Next 5, 3 and the Asian network. Brand domination of BBC National radio will then be complete. His dinkle will have appeared on every network. Razz

although I'm not too keen on Russel Brand, I remember hearing about his reaction at an award ceremony (can't remember which one though I'm afriad) and for some reason a huge snake was brought on stage as part of the 'act' while he was collecting his award - then RB went up and was saying his thank yous - then he broke off and said - it was nice before you brought the snake on, what was that for, it's unneccesary etc
...at which point I was very proud of him Smile
