The BBC is to suspend all competitions after an inquiry unearthed a fresh batch of faked phone-ins.

Serious editorial breaches were found in six shows, including Comic Relief. Director general Mark Thompson said the incidents were "totally unacceptable".

Mr Thompson has outlined a "zero tolerance" approach to any future lapses in editorial judgement.

He also ordered an independent inquiry into footage that wrongly implied the Queen walked out of a photo session.

All phone-related competitions on BBC TV and radio will cease from midnight on Wednesday, while interactive and online competitions will be taken down as soon as possible.

The BBC has been under the spot light for the past couple of days. First the ofcom report now this. At least they are trying to secure where our money is going. Shocked

I expect Mark Thompson is coming down hard to avoid getting his own P45, can't blame him really.
Auntie sure does seem to be in a bit of a pickle at the moment.

Hmm! For about six months I have been entering the Online Popmaster Quiz and getting 10/10 and being put into the draw, but now this simple pleasure has been suspended! Will this also affect my local BBC station which has phone-ins for pop quizzes to win 'tickets for the movies' etc?

I've been entering for months as well Briant. I hope they can sort it out and re instate it.

As for the BBC being in a pickle, I don't think it will just be them, going by what was said on Newsnight tonight.

To be honest it hasn't changed my opinion of the BBC.

I wonder what will happen to the live Pop Master on Ken's show?

It's a shame if that has to go as well.

As far as I know all phone-ins have been suspended for the time being.
It is a shame it's gone this far, I hope it's sorted soon and that some of them such as pop master can come back.

Reports that he was taking a fee for doing CiN wont help either. That plus phone-in deceptions may cause a significant drop in donations this year.

Terry's fee is a seperate issue but I agree it will effect donations, I certainly won't be donating or watching CIN this year.

I hope not Ernie.

I'd rather have the BBC how it is than not at all. The other channels will be found to be much worse I'm sure.

That's not the choice. There is no excuse for their actions. And whether ITV or Ch 4 is better or worse it not really relevant. The BBC is founded on a different basis, supported by a mandatory levy or tax (call it what you will). As such its obligations should be different to the commercial sector.

Well I will be donating. I don't always watch the show and any phone in competition was only a tiny part of the evening.

Of course it's a personal decision but is it a good enough reason to stop some help being given to a child who has had no part in all of this?

Of course there is no excuse for it but this kind of thing is widespread throughout the whole industry. I guess it is worse for the beeb as they are a public service broadcaster.
I'm with Helen, I would rather have the BBC as it is now in spite of it's present difficulties.

I bet the Daily Wail are having a field day with this one, the BBC and CIN in one big hit. Rolling Eyes

The best way to donate to Children In Need would be to buy a Pudsey Bear from ASDA. They're probably the best ever Pudseys this year and everyone should buy one! Wink

As for the BBC, I don't see a problem overall. Just a few examples out of the millions of hours of programming? So what. No need for everyone to get in a tizzy about it.

Yes. The everybody else is doing it defence. I dont think the police or courts accept that defence.

What any other organisation is doing or saying is irrelevant. The BBC must clean up its own act.

Good one ernie! It may be held up in the post! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hello Helen. Yes, even 'Popmaster' on Ken's show is affected, sadly. I thought as much when I heard a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng Dire Straits track. Very apt in the circumstances! I used to watch 'Brainteaser' on Channel 5 but never entered (or inhaled) 'cos I liked the presenter Alex Lovell. I wonder if she is out of work now?

I'm not defending them for heavens sake, I don't think their actions are acceptable at all. Yes the BBC must clean up it's act but so must all the others.

The problem with the Big Quiz it's pre-recorded and each contestant is on for over 15 Minutes, but is edited for the show. Theres no deception as there is no cash involved and the contestants are phoned up.

I know there is no deception but unless they re-instate any quizzes I can't see the big quiz returning any time soon.

Yes - exactly the same as Popmaster, and that's been scrapped!

Poor old Steve - weeks of carefully-planned pre-records down the pan! Laughing Unless, of course, he owns up to all his deceptions...?

That bit of MBA-speak has a familiar ring to it. "How you will be able to address this issue together as a team........" etc etc blah blah. Here we go again.

I'm sure there are lots of older and wiser BBC (and ex-BBC) people who recognise something familiar about that sentence! What a heap of cobblers.

Unions? Blimey...... it's been a few years since either of the two main broadcasting unions had any sway at the beeb.
