"BBC Radio 2 is 40 years old this September. To mark the occasion BBC7 will be broadcasting 2's Comedy on the 29th September - with your help...
From noon on 23 July until midnight on 3 August you'll be able to vote for your favourite comedy programme. The programme that gains the most votes will be included in 2's Comedy - Part 2 hosted by Ken Bruce. "

Fair enough so far, but then you see the list of programmes to choose from :
The Flight of The Conchords
The Day The Music Died
It's Been A Bad Week
Listen to Les (Les Dawson)
The Hee Bee Gee Bees Story
The Eric Morecambe & Ernie Wise Show

Is that honestly the best they could come up with? Flight of The Conchords??!! No "News Huddlines"??!!

Spose we should just be grateful Out To Lunch isn't on the list... Rolling Eyes

It does say "We've got most of the programmes sorted out already, and need you to help us out with the last one" http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/comedy/progpages/twoscomedy.shtml
so presumably they've found the News Huddlines etc.

However, the fact that Doddy fills the whole first part with shows from the first 12 months (stuff brought over from the Light Programme) and Ken then has to cram 39 years into the second half probably speaks volumes about Radio 2's comedy output.

And including Eric & Ernie's 1977 Christmas TV show in the vote indicates they're struggling.

How come Russell Bland isn't on the list ?. He's the latest and greatest thing in the line of Kenny Everett and Jonathan Ross according to the controller of R2 Laughing

Why is BBC7 celebrating R2, why doesn't R2 do it ?

Will we get it repeated on R2, BBC3, BBC4, BBC4 on BBC2 etc ? Wink

And the current R2 controller knows squat of course. I'm still wondering who (and why) they employed the dozy old trout.

Blimey, what a bunch of moaners!

Firstly, I'm sure Radio 2 will have their own celebrations, but isn't it nice that another station is marking the occassion too? (And that station is one that actually listens to and appreciates it's listeners).

Secondly, Russell Brand hasn't done a comedy show for Radio 2 so he can hardly have one nominated! (It was announced he was doing a sitcom over a year ago, but no sign of it so far...)

Thirdly, as Ron says, News Huddlines and Punchlines will be included in Ken Bruce's show. They just want to pick a 6th show from the list. I would like to hear The HeeBeeGeeBees Story because it's the only Radio Active I haven't heard, I have the album it spawned, and it's not been on BBC7 before. But most of the other options are regularly on BBC7.

Fourthly, Flight of the Conchords may divide many people (I like it, my girlfriend hates it) but it did win awards, sold many CDs, and spawned a US TV series on HBO.

Finally - it is NOT the Morecambe & Wise Christmas TV Special. It is an edition of their Radio series recorded specially for Radio 2 and broadcast on Radio 2 in December 1977. The complete series has only just finished a run on BBC7.

I wouldn't say we are moaners Ian, but I'd hardly class Radio 2 as a comedy station, not even 25 years ago.

I heard the trailer in the car this afternoon and my first thought was where was 'The News Huddlines'?

Oh I can't answer that! But it's not a comedy show in the style of the other nominees.

Incidentally, Radio 2 is classed as a music and speech station - with 1 third of programming supposed to be speech. Which is why we get comedy shows and have done for all these years.

Can anyone remember a comedy show on Radio 2 for me.
I think it used to be on at the same time as Russ Abbotts madhouse(which I used to like)
I can't remember a lot about it, but it was like a day in the life of a man, and every now and then he used to sing a song with a guitar.
Also the title of the show may have included his name.
I can almost remember it but not quite and it's beginning to bug me.
Thanks gazmando

Gaz, I think you're thinking of Mervyn Stutter's show. I forget the exact name, but it comes round on BBC7 quite often.
