Tried listening several times this week.
None lasted more than ten minutes, before the "irritation override" kicked in.
Sorry dear, you're not suited to this slot. |

BTW, to cheer you all up a tad I see that Aled Jones is sitting in for Ken next week. Hoorah! No more of the current talentless bint, hence we can listen to radio full time in the mornings again. |

From Scotland on Sunday today:-
"Listeners turned off by 'childish' Davina"
http://scotlandonsunday.scotsman.com/entertainment.cfm?id=1355232007
Extracted....
"The BBC said it had received 156 objections from listeners who felt McCall was an unsuitable replacement for Bruce, but in a statement it defended its choice of stand-in.
"While we fully recognise the strength of feeling that listeners have for Ken Bruce in his regular slot we feel that Davina McCall, who has a great deal of experience in broadcasting, is a suitable stand-in," it said.
"Davina has a chatty style of presentation, in keeping with fellow Radio 2 presenters, such as Chris Evans and Dermot O'Leary." _________________ Over the hill they came....the greatest Army in the World.....The Tartan Army |

I particularly like this comment after the article:
"There is no substitute for the estimable Ken Bruce. Davina McCall is the epitome of trash TV and radio vacuity."
Says it all really. |

I didn't think she was that bad in small doses. They have got to learn, but jumping around didn't give off a good first impression. They are looking for some high profile broadcasters who are different from the rest who have covered for Ken and the rest in the past. 156 complaints an't bad compared to how many actually listen to the network. Kate Thronton got some bad comments when she covered for Sarah a long time ago, but returned. I do think they really should stick to who are well known voices on the network, but shame one was on holiday and the other went to another network. Remember this is Radio 2 and are trying out something different. Is it two fingers to the listeners, again? |

Simply put Radio 2 should stick to professional DJs who have a love of and great knowledge of music past and present. Simple really - well, it is if your name isn't Lesley Douglas who seems to have this fixation with celebrity 'big names'.
We need more professional, knowledgeable presenters along the lines of Bob Harris, Ken Bruce, Stuart Maconie, Mark Radcliffe, etc.
Curiously enough Mark Radcliffe is the only DECENT DJ who Lesley Douglas has signed up since she was put in charge.
Then again, should we completely blame Douglas? Is she simply the unwilling puppet of her bosses - perhaps it is they who are responsible for Douglas's approach? Or perhaps they simply hired her knowing she would mostly go for the 'celeb' approach? |

For me, the main problem with her was the lack of musical knowledge. She knew nothing! Tracks of my Years is usually informative, learning about an artist's musical choice and discussing various styles and influences. But last week she was making baby noises!
She's not going to learn musical knowledge or appreciation no matter how long she's sitting in for Ken. (well, unless she tells us about Eric Clapton... ) |

Well sounds like you would know about kissing Kermit Santa
Arcader, well yes, Aled is doing a better job than Dreadful McCall, but then that's not difficult is it? If I was writing a report on her, it would go something like this:-
Davina McCall sets herself extremely low standards of broadcasting skills and frequently fails to achieve them.
And, what's more RA was a breath of fresh air sitting in for Sarah this morning, IMHO.

At least Davina played some better music than Ken.
Ken never plays a rock and roll track, or a sixties track, or a glam track or an easy listening track etc etc etc.
Not liking Davina is fair enough but bumming Ken Bruce up to be great is just plain wrong.
Take for instance two artists, Elvis Presley and Nina Simone, I guarantee the only songs you would have heard from either of them in the last five years on Kens show is "A Little Less Understanding" and "I Got Life".
Both of those solely played because they were remixed which made them "really cool."
Also take Tracks Of My Years, someone picks out great records and Ken always says what fantastic records they are or great vocals or superb arrangements. But I could count on the fingers of no hands how many times Ken plays them after that.
I find it much more annoying when somebody a lot older than me with a chance to play great records from whatever era keeps churning out the same Coldplay, Keane, Athlete drivel day in day out. |

The records played had nothing to do with Davina, the producer is responsible for the selection. |

Didn't DOL learn about music when he first started? I mean compared to John Inverdale and Davina and both have different TV show John was more knowledgeable about his music? I'm sure she can do some swatting about music etc? |

And it was the same producer as Ken regularly has. He may changed things to match Davina but looking at the playlists on the R2 site it seems to be pretty much the same stuff as usual.
Going by Thursday and Friday I can't see any rarely-played 60s, easy listening, or glam tracks. No Elvis or Nina as far as I can see (and Ken has played far more by those artists than just the 2 songs mentioned above). But I can see plenty of Athlete, Keane, Dire Straits, Roxy Music and Hot Chocolate. The same old artists and the same old songs that are always played, mostly from the late 70s/early 80s with a bit of disco thrown in. That's the Gary Bones way. |

It's not just a case of swaptting up though - a decent Radio 2 presenter needs to have a love for music, the rest will then flow naturally. |

Ken Bruce has shown an amazing lack of ambition. He is basically doing the same job now that he was doing 20 years ago. If he doesn't know how to play a few records and find a few stories to read out of the tabloids by now then he will never learn. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Ernie-Absolutely spot on.
Also could not the same thing be said about Sarah Kennedy, Terry Wogan and Steve Wright
The sooner the existing Radio 2 daytime schedules/presenters are changed the better imho.
The only daytime show that sounds fresh to me is the Chris Evans show which I enjoy when I get to listen in. |

So different from his days with Richard Allinson (his three hour Saturday afternoon show) I was regularly surprised when something I hadn't heard for years got played. One example was Kansas' 'Carry On Wayward Son' though this did get carried over to Ken Bruce's show in more recent times. Another I always associate with Richard's original Saturday show is Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing'. This is what made that show unmissable for me along with most of the Saturday output of the time.
Please Gary, how about throwing in a few 'surprises' like these on Ken's show? _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Dosn't Chris have his staff to put his show together? I think the only two daytime presenters who are in early preparing their shows are Jeremy and Steve & team? Ken comes in from Oxford about an hour early as he's been heard on Wogan's show collecting food many times. |

The reason why they come into the studio earlier is to make sure all the bits and pieces needed for the show are in the right place, that the computer is set up properly, cDs, MDs, incoming lines, running orders, etc etc are all sorted and that levels are set up properly. That can sometimes take an hour. Remember that R2 studios are what's known as back-to-back studios where presenters use alternate studios, so somebody else was using it before and will have left the desk settings as they were.
For KB's slot, the producer will have worked out the running order, booked the guests, etc the day before.
It's not uncommon for a pres to walk into a studio or control room and ask the producer "Ok what have we got today then?". In the lovely Davina's case you can be sure that is what happens, the producer probably said "right here's the running order for the show - this is the music we're playing, these are the inserts etc. I wouldn't be surprised also if the studio manager / engineer is also riding levels in the control room. |
