Same goes for this morning. Except when Lynn gave her last traffic report for the DP he was concerned how he would get caught in traffic. I wonder why, 'was it his 9am BFBS show?  |

Great show this morning, good music choices - 'Whatever get's you through the night' highlights that.
Nice chat also...oh by the way, Richard read out a piece in the Sun claiming David Bowie was going to be in the new Doctor Who series, well David's webside have said this is all nonsense!
A great show, look forward to another one on BFBS at 9.

(Bit off topic)Been listening to MacConie at 8 - 10. Hey, it's not a bad show. Got really into it recently driving to Bristol recently. Hate driving on Motorways at night...specially when you get past all the lighted areas!! mind you the sky was clear.

Apparently it's a loud of rollocks. The best person too know would be David Bowie. I wouldn't say it was a big story of the day. |

He's only got to nip from Portland Place to Paddington. It's hardly a transatlantic flight! |

Paddington? Allinsons Albums for BBC Local could be either live or recorded from London now? He used to travel for BBC Oxford on Sundays which probarly was a pain? |

No. Paddington is where BFBS radio had studios. I think they've been closed as part of cost cuts. They're out at the main broadcasting production centre at Gerrards Cross (which is where the wednesday National Lottery prog comes from - they call it "Lottery HQ" - I do believe).
BFBS studios are built to exactly the same tech specs as BBC studios (and by BBC engineers, back in the days when the BBC respected and employed such overworked animals) so Ricardo will always feel at home although the very latest digital studios at the new BH are ahead of everybody else at the moment.
Incidentally, all BBC broadcasting centres everywhere are connected to each other on what's called The Circuit, so there would be nothing to stop Ricardo doing his local radio slots from other BBC studios and listeners would never know. |

Would mention that Richard advised on his BFBS radio show earlier this week that while he has been away the BFBS studios have been given a makeover including the introduction of state of the art technical aspects to the desk he has to drive. He advised "I love the new gear that has been introduced-very high tech"-perhaps it's on a par with the equipment over at the BBC now. |

It's all built around a server-based playout system now. Very little hardware on the presenter's desk these days (gone are the cart machine stacks, turntables - even large CD players). Now, anybody who's logged in to the show's running order on a system like Galileo can drag and drop items to reorder them. That's why it's easy for Davina to do her show - somebody else is driving the desk for her.
Trouble is that when the system hangs, it hangs big time - as has happened on occasions at R2 and the presenter has had to decamp in a hurry to the studio next door. It sounds like it's settled down now though as ops and presenters get used to the system and the bugs are ironed out.
The new digital systems are designed to read the meta tag data that's encoded into digital audio tracks, and the playlist software will automatically transmit the track title, artist and album along with the audio itself - that's how you get an iPod-style display on a DAB set or satellite box.
Ever wondered why many local radio stations and even ITV stations all look and sound the same? That's because most programming can be set up centrally on a playout server, with the localised inserts (eg: commercials, promos, etc) being played out to each station to make it sound as if it's coming from the local radio or TV station. They can even run all the regional Tv and radio news from central london studios if they wanted and you'd never know. (In fact, isn't that part of the ITV1 plan?)
And that's why it all sounds so uniformly bland!
Nothing like cueing up a 45rpm record on a studio turntable or hearing a cart tape wobble in a Sonifex cart machine! |

He often tries to tell his listeners a little about the equipment he is using- and more importantly when things go wrong he also tries to explainswhat he thinks the problem is.

Richard's known to be very technically adept, actually. He can jump from one studio environment to another and not be phased by the experience. However, the new R2 studios at BH did require specific 1-to-1 training sessions for all presenters, they are that different. Some took to them quicker than others.
Johnnie Walker was reputed to have had a moan about them at first but he bedded in OK. He likes more hands-on operation rather than mouse clicks, I can't say I blame him really.
Isn't it interesting how different he sounded on the pirate essex ship lately - amazing what a couple of turntables and a simple analogue mixer can do for the soul eh? |

I know that the BFBS studios have had a big make over recently.
They are actually a charity although SSVC does have some profit making services BFBS is not one of them. Like any public service broadcaster they have a budget and must stick to it so i'd imagine the move to sky has been budgeted for.
Yes I know about the BBC Radio studios, public money is paying for this high tec operation. |

BFBS isn't a public service broadcaster, it's financed by the MOD in much the same way that the BBC World Service is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Looking at that, I can see that there's close correlation with what I've written above. I don't work for BFBS and nor have I ever done, but i know people who have and I know enough about how things are set up, the point about what I said about Sky being a carrier (for example) was correct.

Obviously some don't like her, but millions do tune in. She has an MBE for services to broadcasting and fits well with the early morning crew who want something gentile, friendly and thoughtful to start the day.
I hope she recovers soon, it's obviously quite serious to have this amount of time off. So what if she has more time than the others, she may have problems we don't know about, or just find it more difficult to manage, everybody is different, but her amount of time off is not that bad, particularly for a lady of her age doing an anti-social shift with her high profile status and lifestyle. I'm sure the BBC don't see it as a huge problem, apart from these press reports or rare on air issues.
I think the slur against Sarah has to stop now. Thankyou... |
