It is the high street retailer best known for its Pic'n'mix range of sweets and its bargain basement toys, homeware and children's clothing.

But next week Woolworths makes an unlikely foray into the luxury end of a competitive and discriminating market. It will launch an own-brand champagne with a selling point that Taittinger and Veuve Clicquot will find hard to match: at £5, Woollies says that its will be the cheapest champagne in Britain.

I never go into Woolworths.... I used to but not any more. Our's has gone from a pretty decent, well laid out store to a cheap jack QD type mess. I hate it.
just thought I'd mention it...

I agree. Woolworths used to be a fantastic shop but now it seems to sell all the stuff that the " everything a £1 shops" wouldn't be able to justify charging a pound for. It's all just cheap tat imported from China. This latest cheap bubbly is just frothy nonsense to prop up the idea that the younger generation can live an affluent celeb lifestyle on their minimum wage.

The Grauniad's article doesn't show the whole bottle and its label
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/09/08/nchamp108.xml

It looks like it's from the "Everything's a Pound" shop.

I've never had a taste for champagne. It's far too gassy, and dry (= sour) and far too expensive. Even at a fiver.

The CHampagne is from the Henry Villois Champagne House (owned by Champagne Mignon). The owner, Bruno Mignon has confirmed that Woolworths are selling the Champagne at a loss compared to the price that it is sold to the UK importers, Park Lane Champagne.

In other words it's a gimmick.

Didn't think Woolies were in a fit state to sell anything at a loss.

Sounds a bit like desperation.

(Can't think of anything else alcoholic that they currently sell, other than liqueur chocolates, so presumably they'll have to apply for off-licences for the stores that stock it, as well)

I was thinking that too. Maybe it has no alcohol in it? There's one thing for sure....it won't have any champagne in it. Very Happy

Has anyone seen the new Woolies ad on TV? Featuring 2 puppets, a canned laughter soundtrack and Darth Vader it's just bizarre!
