Number 10 has a new resident in the form of Sybil the cat.

Sybil has arrived from Edinburgh with Chancellor Alastair Darling and his wife. She will make her home in the residential quarters of Number 10. PM Gordon Brown and his family live in the flat above Number 11.

Mr and Mrs Darling inherited the black and white tabby from a friend and have cared for her for some time. She is well known to the PM's family and will be provided food and litter in both Downing Street apartments. It is rumoured that she has a miaow similar to that of the infamous Sybil Fawlty from the TV programme Fawlty Towers.

Sybil is Downing Street's first cat since Humphrey, who retired in 1997. She will have free rein to come and go around the Downing Street estate.
