Standby Matthew Bannister is sitting in for Jeremy at lunchtime. Your Ex Radio 1 controller now a broadcaster. |

I well remember MB as a "broadcaster" long before he climbed the greasy pole to become Controller. Mark O must be younger than he types... _________________ MiS |

He is probably the best broadcaster on Radio 5. Maybe not a huge compliment but he is good & has a very sharp clear mind. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Spent time at Capital as well. He started their evening news programme "The Way It is" if I am remembering things correctly. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I'm sure it's just coincidence that he stands in on a day when Steve Wright is on holiday... |

I despise the bloke and I always will.
I feel he started the arrogant attitude towards listeners over the age of 20 that now also pervades Radio 2. |

I heard one of his shows this week, and I thought it was awful. It was reduced to nothing more than a local radio phone-in show - worse even than JV's normal effort which is itself a million miles removed from the more genteel Jimmy Young Show it replaced.
I thought Bannister was just appalling in the slot. |

I think Bannister has a beter grip of the issues than Vine. He would make a good Today presenter on Radio 4. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Trouble is that he has earned a reputation in the broadcasting industry for being an arrogant little sh*t, that's his trouble. Ask anybody who works in London-based radio and they'll confirm the fact....... |

Trouble is he came up with a show that just sounded like any other radio phone-in. I hate radio phone-ins - they're so 1970s ILR. The mid-day R2 slot has always been designed to have slightly more rounded edges. It might be OK on 5 Live but I don't think his style is suited to the JV slot. And anyway, he's still an arrogant little............. |

'rounded edges' ?
To me the JV show is designed to be tabloid controversal, no real depth just headlines. Find 2 punters to argue, encouraged by JV with ideas which are just thrown in to provoke, and then after 20mins move on the the next...
OFF button for me. |

... in that, when JY presented, it was less "in yer face" with more softer elements in addition to debate about topical issues, and certainly not the type of relentless phone-in that has become prevalent on UK radio since the advent of ILR in the early 70s.

I agree. The slot, as presented by JV, annoys the hell out of me for exactly those reasons. I rarely listen now, either (not that I get too much of a chance due to work commitments). |

Who's ernie?
Anyhow, the JV show isn't an "interview" show - it's supposed to be a radio show that mixes music with topical discussion. It's not meant to be Newsnight or The Politics Show. That's why I think Hatchet-man Bannister's style was appalling during his week-long tenure. |
