Hello everyone....

Having a cup of tea and borrowing my cousin's laptop to log in whilst on holiday here up in the far north of Scotland. Heading up to the Cape Wrath area to camp for the next week (must be mad - northerly winds and temperatures down in the low teens!) before heading to other locations down the west coast.

Radio reception isn't all it could be in some locations, so may have to catch up with what's happening with my favourite radio station when I finally get home!

Hope everyone's keeping okay. Smile

Camping in North Scotland Shocked , tie that tent down. Hopefully the wind will blow the midges away.

Great place when the sun shines, been there when sunny and 27deg C. Smile

Enjoy the west coast Smile

Hi Cherskiy, no need to apologise, had missed your photies & quick wit though. I hope you enjoy your holiday up in the Highlands camping, as you say could be just a wee bit windy. Hope it's not like Anglesey with horizontal rain Shocked

Hello everyone, taking a break from the far north in the relative comfort of my cousin's home north of Inverness.

Have spent the last week on the camp site at Durness, near Cape Wrath - to say it is exposed would be an understatement! Shocked Laughing Horizontal rain most days and wind that literally blows you off your feet at times - but when it's sunny, it's one of the most beautiful places in Britain. A friend who was also camping with me called Sutherland 'Moon Country' and he's got a point - his first exposure to the area but it won't be the last I think.

Watching a US Navy warship shelling Garvie Island with its main gun was impressive - big bangs and even bigger plumes of stone, dust and grit when the rounds landed on target. A few years ago, a US Navy warship managed to shell a headland four miles to the east by mistake, luckily there are no houses there! Shocked Next week I've got the jets to watch bombing the island with live 1000lb bombs - the only place in the UK mainland they're allow to use such weapons on practice. I suspect they will be loud! Cool

If you don't mind remote places, like the great outdoors and are prepared to rough it for a few days, I'd heartily recommend the North Coast of Scotland. It also helps if you have a 'bombproof' tent - which I do (I've camped at Durness before!).

Back to the grind next weekend, worse luck....

Laughing Garvie Island is a naval gunnery and bombing range about six miles to the east of Cape Wrath, a couple of hundred yards off the coast and, more importantly, at least a mile from the nearest house! Very Happy You can stand on the headland next to the MOD control tower and watch what goes on - although it's extremely windy up there most of the time - nothing to stop the winds coming down from the Arctic!

Sutherland is sodden at the moment - not surprising given the amount of rain they've had recently. Locals reckon they haven't had many good days since the beginning of the year. I invested in a better pair of boots this morning at Tiso in Inverness - a pair of Scarpas that I've been thinking about for some time now.

Thinking about going up to the Loopalu Music Festival in Ullapool tonight - if I can be bothered to drive back across to the East Coast afterwards! Smile

LEE/BB, just for you both, a shot of an Armee de l'Air Mirage 2000N from EC.02.004 at low level running into attack the Kylesku Bridge in NW Sutherland a week ago last Monday. Not the greatest or closest shot I've ever taken, but the weather was poor and I had just got out of the car when this popped up - I could have obtained full frame shots from a hilltop overlooking the bridge if I'd had 30 minutes warning....

Can't win 'em all! Sad

Thanks for that Cherskiy. It's still not that bad a shot.
