Sky News are tonight speculating that Gordy "I love a good crisis" Brown will hold a general election on Nov 1st.
Does anyone want an election?

Well, lots of people in the labour party do. So do I. At least if the party wins again it'll shut up those who constantly whinge about things - and it will force a leadership challenge in the tory party. That should be fun. |

Well, lots of people in the labour party do. So do I. At least if the party wins again it'll shut up those who constantly whinge about things - and it will force a leadership challenge in the tory party. That should be fun. |
I think Gordon's lead will evaporate before Nov 1st. Pertrol goes up on Monday by 2p a litre thanks to Gordon.
We could be in for a hung parliament. But the Lib Dems are floundering. I would predict Labour to be the largest party, the LD's to lose big, and the Tories to pick up 50-60 seats from both.

| It doesn't bother me either way. I don't vote for any of the mainstream parties, I always vote for independent candidates out of principle. At least I'm voting for a person to represent me rather than a party lackey. |

I was told years ago they perfered to have General Elections in the summer as voters dont like going out in the dark nights and can lose votes. Now days it's diffferent with postal votes.
My mum said 'her mum was picked up by a Tory member and was taken to vote, but when she got to the voting station she voted Labour, but the guy still took her home.

Alistair Campbell would have run over her if she had done that.
Yes the only election in recent memory between Oct1st - Mar 1st was in 1974 when Ted Heath asked "Who governs Britain?"
The voters replied "not you mate"
That election was on 28 Feb

Labour's lead over the Conservatives has fallen sharply compared to a week ago, two opinion polls have suggested.
The government was four points ahead of the Tories in a YouGov survey for Channel 4 News, whereas it was 11 points in front last week.
And a Populus poll for The Times showed a three-point gap, down from 10 points seven days ago.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown is expected to decide this weekend whether to call a snap general election this autumn.
Some 40% of those questioned by YouGov would vote Labour in any general election, down from 44% in a similar survey last week.
STATE OF THE PARTIES
40% - Labour
36% - Conservatives
13% - Liberal Democrats
11% - Other
Source: YouGov/Channel 4 News
The Tories were up three points at 36%, while the Lib Dems were static on 13%.
In the Populus survey, for which 803 adults were interviewed on Tuesday and Wednesday, Labour was on 39%, compared to 41% last week.

A Guardian poll has Labour ahead by 1%. Brown doesnt have the conjoles to call an election with those numbers. He will suffer from having taken the country to the brink & backed down.

I find it really hard to believe the Conservatives are running close to Labour in that poll.
I've always voted Conservative but I wouldn't bother now. I see them as headless chickens jumping on any bandwagon they can find.
I don't even know what their policies are! I'm also still sulking at how quickly Mr. Howard gave up after getting my vote.
They should be ashamed at the low turnout in this country.
I think they should all get off their backsides, say what they really feel about things and bring some politics back to the country, hopefully raising some interest for people to actually vote!

Apparently it's the plan to cut tax that is giving the Tories the boost. Not surprising since you dont see much for all the money Gordon has taken over the last 10 years.

I love it when I hear Tories promising Tax cuts - especially on the scale that the impressionable young whipper-snapper Cameron is promising. I'd love to know how they're proposing to make up the shortfall without making cuts. And then if they start making huge cuts they'll get the whingers whinging!

Many other countries - Ireland is a prime example have proven that cutting tax rates can increase the overall tax take. In 1994 Ireland cut CGT from 40% to 20%. Capital gains tax revenues increased 600% between 1993 and 1998.

Yes, but the difference is that Ireland has seen an unprecedented period of growth and prosperity - and the political will to make it work. The difference here is that Cameron won't keep his promise. Or if he does I'll eat my hat (he'll have to get into Government first so I'm pretty safe anyhow!) |

Does it really make that much difference to most people? couple of quid a week?
I'm more interested in tougher laws, strict immigration control, less red tape for business and getting many more coppers on the streets!

Oooh an election .... they can be fun .. last time around I got my MP, when he knocked on our door, to stand on one leg ....in exchange for my vote ... he's the only MP who's ever done anything for me ... so..good old Mr Letwin ( he's so sweet) gets my vote again .. you know he even hopped back down my my driveway afterwards .... in true blue Tory style, he exceeded my expectations.....
Bring it on Gordon.... bet you can't stand on one leg for very long... |

There is no need whatever for a General Election right now. G Brown has a perfectly adequate majority and there's plenty of precedent for a new Prime Minister continuing for a lengthy period without going to the country (Eden/Macmillan, Macmillan/Home, Wilson/Callaghan).
In any case the opinion polls are far from a reliable guide to what might actually happen on Election Day. In 1970, Harold Wilson was lured by favourable polls to go to the country several months earlier than he was constitutionally obliged to and lost by about 30 seats. So GB may wish to go carefully.

I can just picture him doing that. The Conservatives seem to have all the "characters" - Boris, Anne Widdecome, etc. The Labour lot seem to be very dull these days since Galloway left them.

Athough there are many people in Hull East who will maintain that he's been a very good constituency MP for well over 30 years, Surely that plays against the notion that he's "a joke"? I feel sure the image he has acquired is the result of the image he's been given by the tabloid media and I don't for one minute believe it.
In balance, I also think that Boris Johnson is probably a decent bloke as well - in fact I'd welcome the opportunity to have a pint or three in the pub with both of them. Again, media-created image isn't always accurate.
Not long after she resigned as a result of the "salmonella" scare, I had the opportunity to work with Edwina Currie and I found her a really amiable and funny person to be with. Not the media-generated impression at all! |

The election is off. Brown said there will be no election this year or next. A poll tomorrow has the Tories 8% ahead in marginal seats.
I had to laugh listening to Any Questions last night when Yvette Cooper was squirming over what "deep matters of constitutional principle" Brown was pondering over before deciding what to do. Is an opinion pool a constitutional matter now?

Why should he call an election of he dosen't want to, let face it if there is a chance he would lose he would be daft to take the risk if it's not needed.
Of course now he has got the tories to reveal their polices earlier than they wanted too, they are narked, understandable I guess. All this gives Gordo time to shamlessly nick those polices that he thinks might be popular, maybe he's not as weak as some whining gits are making out. |

Speculation which he fueled for 3 full weeks. Who do you think was spinning. It was Douglas Alexander, Ed Balls and a few others. These guys are putting this stuff out on behalf of Brown. Now that it has backfired spectacularly, you can expect recriminations.

I would agree with you ernie, the polls were looking good for Labour, trip to Iraq to make annoucements of troop withdrawal which to say the least are not really as they are stated by Golden Brown and the Tories appearing to be in disarray. Now the polls show at the very best, labour & Tories neck & neck, at the worst Tories in front. Now Gordon's, running scared, so who's to blame & who's to gain?

David Cameron has accused Gordon Brown of "treating the British people as fools" in not calling a snap election.
Mr Brown told the BBC he had had a "duty" to consider whether to hold an election, but decided against it so he could show his "vision" for Britain.

I think that was refering to the local councils, and people who take up there time manning these polling stations. Neither of them were ready. They are trying to keep the country on there toes. Don't worry we all vote BNP |
