Tying up the "Loose Ends", so to speak:

He was 76, according to the article.

Yes, he was born on 18 February 1931, so he was indeed 76.

I briefly met NS in 1988, when I was a contestant on his R4 quiz, Counterpoint. I was knocked out in the first round by the eventual series winner. Six contestants for two shows met Mr Sherrin and the production team over a pre-recording tea at the Paris Theatre, Lower Regent St, London. He was charm itself and put us all at our ease during the warm-up and the recording proper. Yet, for all his exemplary courtesy, he kept just a touch of distance from us--I wasn't surprised that he didn't join us in the pub afterwards.

He was unmarried but I think his (non-showbiz) brother is still living. My sympathy to the family.

Ian.

So farewell to yet another of the That Was The Week That Was team, in fact the instigator of it. Without the erudite Mr Sherrin who knows how long it would have taken the BBC, and the nation at large, to discover satire.

The curse of wikipedia strikes again. BBC News (and the Times & one or two other papers) reported that Hazlehurst wrote the S Club 7 hit "Reach for the Stars". The only evidence of this is in wikipedia. Apparently he had nothing to do with S Club 7.
