|
|
BBC newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky is leaving the corporation to join commercial broadcaster Five.
She will join the channel in the New Year and replaces Kirsty Young, who left Five News in the summer.
"After five incredibly rewarding years at the BBC, I found the chance to work with the team at Five too exciting to pass up," Ms Kaplinsky said.
She joined BBC Breakfast from Sky News in 2002 before moving on to present the Six O'Clock News.
I hear she will be paid a million a year blimey!
You can't blame her really can you? Good luck to the girl.

Good riddance. She's plastic and insincere. If her ego can cope with losing 5.5m viewers, I'm sure she'll be fine. |

I'm surprised she's accepted the deal - it means that she'll have to present what C5 laughingly calls "news" standing halfway up a scaffold rig! They can't even afford seats!
Still, its Autocuties the German owner of C5 is looking for - and for a cool million smackers they've obviously got it.
So much for Natasha's journalistic integrity. C5? Yuck. |

Ah no, apparently they're having a revamp and the presenters will be sitting down! |

I had an idea a long while ago that news readers could sit at..... a desk!

But is it a Real Desk (of the physical variety) in a Real set (rather than the virtual variety)? Mind you, is Ms. Kerplunckski a real news presenter or a virtual one?
I wonder. |

There is no reason why they should sit at desks. Information is frequently better conveyed from a standing position eg. in lectures. The desk is not even required anymore for practical purposes of holding a script. I think a lot of poor communicators hide behind desks like bank managers of old. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

What it does is imply that the presentation of "news" is an unimportant and transient matter which is there to provide visually-appealing glue between two more ratings-earning items. Just look at the BBC3 news - a complete and utter waste of time and space. And they're always standing up as well! (And the presenters are only doing the job because they haven't yet had a better offer of theif own prime-time network series).
The body language of news presentation is such that it tends to add to the credibility when the context requires the news presenters to be seated. When they're standing (such as in the laughable ITV news from ITN or even the BBC1 daytime bulletins) we tend to sub-consciously think that the presenters are dying to be somewhere else in a hurry.
As often they are.
If the set is "virtual" - what about the stories that are being communicated? |

Well I never felt that any of my former college lectures standing or walking across a stage indicated that what they were seeking to convey was unimportant and transient.
As regards tv news, I quite like a graphic to illustrate a financial, scientific or political story rather than just have dry copy read out. Information is conveyed much better via a visual illustration and tv is a visual medium. Otherwise its just radio with pictures.
Obviously illustrations need to be relevant but the same rules applying with good script writing. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

and now for something completely different...
I remember when newsreaders had a phone on their desk or maybe two phones.
Lets bring back the newsdesk... and a vase of flowers with nice curtains behind. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

"Graphics" is one thing - virtual sets in which the presenter is walking around a green-screen with remote programmable camera head following CGI in sync is a different matter. That's a matter of "style over substance". Much like modern TV news, in fact. Ms. Kerplunkski will be at home no doubt!
In fact, maybe they should generate a virtual model of her which can automatically read an Autocue - that way they can save the Million fee! |

Remember Max Headroom on C4 20 years ago? Same technology........ only now it's much more advanced.
In fact, how do we know that Ms. Kerplunski is real?
Somebody tell C5! |

I understand it was in the BBC's brief for BBC3 to have news on, but they got away with it by shoehorning it into 60 seconds just to meet the contract.
Komplaninsky did say she found the chance to work with the 5 team too exiting to pass up......got nothing to do with the one million pound contract then...? _________________ Some say he once threw a microwave oven at a tramp and that all his potted plants are called 'Steve'.....all we know is, he's called 'The Stig!'. |

It would be good if the OP could spell her name correctly. I dont quite understand the level of hatred against the lady. If she is not worth the money, they will drop her pretty quickly. It is RDF's money to spend as they wish. Its not like the licence fee is being frittered away. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I don't think anybody particularly hates her (she achieved a First at Oxford and is obviously an intelligent and sensible person who deserves whatever success she has worked for) but this is more a criticism of the Tv news culture today - as exemplified by the "resignation" of Moira Stewart this week and the recent standing down of Anna Ford from fronting the BBC1 daytime news bulletins.
They're called "autocuties" and the tendancy to put cute-looking babes out front to read the so-called news (whatever "news" is, but that's another diebate) isn't good for broadcasting standards in the UK. We used to have the best broadcasting standards in the world, and whilst I still vehemently defend the BBC (it gave me the best possible training I could get and fed my family for 16 years, after all) I lament the "style over substance" emphasis of radio and Tv these days.
In the light of this, I'm not in the least bit surprised that Ms. Kaplinsky is running off to C5 and a reported £500,000 salary. Good luck to her, though. |

Actually I rather like her, I didn't realise that the play on words of her name meant I hated her
You will notice I wished her well, ok she's a bit twee but what's to not like. |

I should clarify (and probably apologise to TTS - sorry!). I've read a lot of very spiteful stuff written about her elsewhere on the net, which seems to be inspired mainly by spite and jealousy. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I've read some of that too, it's not nice, not nice at all and totally unecessary. As I said I like the lass and having seen her on 'Who do you think you are' she seems like a nice, caring person too. |

Anyone remember "Drop The Dead Donkey"?
That's how I like my news
And it was probably more "up-to-the-minute" than a lot of current news shows... they used to record and edit pieces right up to transmission time to get the latest stuff in.
Apparently, the series was originally to be called "Dead Belgians Don't Count" but C4 balked at that title, unsurprisingly _________________ He's not the Messiah- he's a very naughty boy! |

POV Message board has a thread about why do the BBC 6 News have two presenters behind the desk. " One Quotes " Incase Natasha Kaplinsky autocue breaks down"
She will be on her own at Five. |

I'm not sure I would describe Ms Kaplinsky, or any of the other BBC newreaders, male or female, as "cuties". In fact quite a lot of them, particularly in the regions, are the exact opposite. Natasha (along with her colleague Fiona Bruce) is quite bland, and I don't think much of her interviewing skills, but she is very smart and reads the news very clearly. What more could one want of a newsreader?
Now when it comes to what she's reading, that's a different matter, and I'm with you on the "style over substance" argument. However I suppose we have to accept that the average 21st century viewer at 6 or 9 in the evening would be turned off a more in-depth or sober treatment of the news, and will have to tolerate the brightly coloured graphics, virtual sets and near-tabloid-standard scripts. _________________ Ron |

I saw that and thought she came across as very stiff and formal....
I wanted to nudge her and say "Oh go on love, let go of your emotions and have a good cry"

The final twist to this story is that they will not be replacing Natasha at all, instead George Alagiah will be doing the six o'clock news on his own.
I'm pleased about this, can't see the need for 2 newsreaders myself and I like George so good for him. |
