BBC chairman Sir Michael Lyons has said leading broadcasters should stay out of the public debate on the future of news and current affairs at the corporation.

Good idea. Unless they want to explain why they are worth the £1m salary they are paid each year.

Good idea for John Humphrey and Terry Wogan.

Michael Lyon sounds like a right barrel of laughs dosen't he? Rolling Eyes
So nobody at the BBC is allowed to express their concerns about 3,000 folks being laid off, how sad.

I don't think Paxo, Humph, Terry etc get 1 million by the way and even if they do, well lets be honest if someone came waving a bit fat cheque at you what would you say?

This is a difficult one, because on the one hand if they were employees of your average company or even PLC, they are normally required to allow the PR departments to do the "fronting" with the public and press (quite reasonably). Although the BBC has its own Press & PR department, we're talking about experienced broadcast journalists (and very good ones too, at the top of their league) who feel very strongly about the way the BBC is being steered into an abyss. So, in a sense, they're really doing their jobs by voicing their concerns and raising the public debate about an organisation which is, after all, accountable to all the citizens of the UK.

We're all stakeholders in the BBC, so in that respects it's unique, and it is duty-bound to conduct itself in accordance with the Charter - even if it's been amended somewhat and, some would say, watered down a bit.

I think that, given that these broadcasters are voicing the feelings of many of the public, they're probably right to act as whistleblowers for the sake of us all.

I don't have a problem with Steve Wright. I just don't listen! It would be nice to have a decent alternative between 2-5pm though, in addition to the rubbish that comes after it.

Harsh maybe but totally fair IMO, though at least I can listen to R2 between 5:00-7:00pm this week.

You joined in with this particular session too so you've really no room to talk.

Any chance of getting back on topic? Did anyone see Michael Lyons on the Andrew Marr show this morning?

I thought he looked shifty, I felt Marr was worried about saying the wrong thing so he went easy on him.

By the way does anyone know What Michael Lyons got his knigthood for? Confused

Hmm, I just googled him Shocked I didn't realise he had such close links to the labour party.

By the way this is what he said on April 4th this year when he took over

Under my leadership, the Trust will continue to safeguard the BBC's editorial independence and ensure that is impartial," he told a press conference.
"Every member of the UK population pays the same licence fee and each have an equal ownership.
"My job as chairman of the Trust is to ensure that we listen to the main and varied views throughout the UK and seek to ensure they are reflected in the work and output of the BBC.
"I believe I can bring both experience and enthusiasm from my earlier career."

Hmmm.......

The role of the Trust is more akin to a regulator now anyway. They do not have any say over day to day management
