George Alagiah is to be the sole presenter of BBC1's Six O'Clock News, following the departure of Natasha Kaplinsky.

Alagiah, who has been presenting the bulletin since January 2003, will be on his own from November.

One of the BBC's most respected newsreaders, Alagiah joined the BBC in 1989 and became a foreign correspondent specialising in Africa.

Besides the Six O'Clock News, he now presents World News Today on BBC World, the BBC's international news channel.

He has also published books, including A Home from Home, which discussed the nature of modern British identity.

The BBC head of television news, Peter Horrocks, said the Six O' Clock News would be built around Alagiah's "warmth and great experience".

"The bulletin has a special remit to report fully stories from around the UK and we will be devising plans with George to fulfil this objective, at a time when our competitors are reducing their commitment to the regions of the UK," he added.

"The move is also a more effective use of resources while still maintaining the core values of the bulletin."

The move follows the departure of Alagiah's co-presenter Natasha Kaplinsky, who is joining Channel Five News on a £1m-a-year deal.

The Six O' Clock News is watched by an average of 4.2 million viewers a night.

BBC insiders are viewing the switch back to a single presenter format on the 6pm bulletin as part of Mr Horrocks' move to cut costs in his department.

The Six O'Clock News has had two presenters since January 2003, when Alagiah and Sophie Raworth replaced Huw Edwards who moved to his current role anchoring the 10 O'Clock news.

Yay! I like George Alagiah even if he does sometimes look like he's about to burst into uncontrollable laughter.
