Did I hear Sarah Kennedy say that Michael Parkinson wants to give up his Sunday slot on R2?
If so, a prime slot will be up for grabs.
What would you like to see occupying it?
My vote would be for a Sounds of the Seventies of comparable length and composition to SOTS.
What would your vote be for?

It's true, he's quitting to spend more time in Oz and US.
Sad, sad news for we who love his kind of music. I shudder to think what will replace Parky. One thing's for sure, it'll mean less Sinatra, Ella and other quality singers.

Who has be trialled in the slot:
Kirsty Young - cant do it as Desert Island Discs is on Radio 4 at the same time
Michael Ball - possibly?
Matthew Wright - not right for the slot
Clive Anderson - maybe?
Clare Teal - could be why she was trialled on the Dawn Patrol?

I suspect that She Who Must Be Obeyed will take the opportunity to reorganise or otherwise muck about with the whole Sunday schedule.
If, however the show is to remain in its present format of media interviews with music I wouldn't mind seeing Kirsty Young taking over. (The other usual holiday cover, Clive Anderson, never sounds comfortable in the seat, and I'm not sure that his musical taste is anything like Parky's.)

His Sunday morning show was getting 2.4 million listeners each week apparently.
In the papers he said he had never been to France or Italy as a tourist. Hard to believe isn't it?

It's been confirmed on Digital Spy. Michael Parkinson will leave at Christmas.
Prepare for Russell Brand to be promoted to Sunday mornings. 
Hopefully, Parky's departure will mean a clean up of the Sunday morning schedule. Hopefully, Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs will get the chop!

No thank you. I think it's about time she 'went travelling' as well. Aled Jones is always so much better on the the Dawn Patrol.
I daresay the format will change on Sunday morning Radio 2. So long as it isn't given to somebody like Russell Brand, Davina McCall or Paul O'Grady then I'm not bothered. I'd rather they introduced a request show hosted by Ed Stewart. |

Michael Parkinson has quit his long-running BBC Radio 2 show so that he can go travelling around the world with his wife.
The veteran broadcaster had already announced that he would be quitting his TV talk show at Christmas after thirty years. But he has now decided that he should end his Sunday Supplement show on the radio as well to free up his time.
Parkinson will broadcast the last show in December before jetting off to Australia for a family Christmas.
He revealed he would then spend most of his free time travelling and writing his autobiography.
The 72-year-old said: "My wife Mary and I want to wander around and see places we have never been able to see before. I have been to France and Italy and so on as a working journalist but not as a holidaymaker.
"I have been working for most of my life so it is about time I had a break.
"We have wanted to spend more time in Australia where my grandchildren are. I would like to live in New York for a few months of the year and there are parts of Europe that we have never been able to see."
BBC Radio 2 controller Lesley Douglas said about the news: "I wish Michael well. He has given Radio 2 many years of great service. His Sunday morning show will be missed."

| Michael Parkinson is rich. This would explain why he always used to have 6 weeks off at the beginning of the year sunning himself in Australia. I don't think he's no great loss. At least Radio 2 still has Terry Wogan - for the time being! |

Being serious for a minute it will be sad when he does leave hearing his voice on Radio 2. He's one of the legends of TV and Radio broadcasting. I'm sure he will be sadly missed by some. But we on here don't need to come on this message board and start to slag him down. Thank you  |

I would like Richard Allinson to do 11-1.
He can play any kind of music and does excellent interviews and Sunday Paper reviews.
The music could still be similar but sadly i can't see it happening.
Michael Ball or even Clive Anderson have been mentioned.
Let's see what Jan 2008 brings

| I think the Sunday 11.00-1.00 slot would be better suited to Johnnie Walker. I'd also like to see some concessions made to the broader music tastes that Parky has in the slot too. Maybe Ed Stewart for the afternoon slot afterwards. |

I'll agree with that too. Didn't I see somewhere a post suggesting SOT70s be put on Sundays and extended to the same length as SOT60s. That's also something I can agree with. For me, the 1970s were as eclectic in their own way as the 1960s were and I don't see how you can do the 1970s justice in a show that only lasts ½ hour , even though Steve Harley gives it his best shot.

I am still appalled that Sounds of the Seventies has been demoted to midnight Thursdays and The Organist Entertains moved to Tuesday nights at 10pm. That is nothing but an insult to the listeners. I'm sorry but I think Nigel Ogden is long overdue for the chop.
Sounds of the Seventies deserves a better slot. How about the show being moved to Saturday mornings at 9am, with Sounds of the Sixties being cut back to an hour? I have never understood why Brian Matthew gets 2 hours yet Steve Harley only gets a mere 30 minutes.
Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs was good when it first started way back in 1996 but 11 years later the show is a complete joke. Most of the music played is not what I could call romantic. Another thing that annoys me is those "Love the show!" e-mails and letters Steve reads out week after week. This show is absolute tripe.
Shame Ed Stewart wasn't moved to Sunday mornings in place of Steve Wright in April 2006 rather than being moved out the door. |

I agree. Unfortunately he didn't get on with the (then) new controller, apparently, whereas Wrighty appears to get on with everyone! |

Lesley Douglas has worked at Radio 2 since 1985; Ed Stewart had worked for Radio 2 since 1991. After years of working together I am surprised there were so many hostilities between them. Jim Moir didn't seem to like Stewpot very much, either. He demoted him to Sundays in 1999.
How on earth the egotistic, stubborn, arrogant, up-his-own-arse Steve Wright has become so big on Radio 2 is beyond me. He's hosted the same format since 1980 yet still gets praised for it. Sacking Ed Stewart and Richard Allinson and introducing the likes of Chris Evans, Dermot O'Leary and Russell Brand is an insult. |

The latter part of Lesley Douglas' statement worries me. "His Sunday morning show will be missed" which gives off the impression that a new format is on the cards.
There was talk a while back of Jonathan Ross being moved to Sunday mornings and either Danny Baker or Russell Brand getting the Ross' Saturday slot. I wonder if this is on the cards? |

I for one would be sad to see the format of the Sunday lunchtime programme changed. Although Russell Davies, Malcolm Laycock and David Jacobs play music of a certain vintage later on, Parky's mix of big band, easy, jazz and crossover music from the 40s right up to date, including the pick of the "young pretenders", is unique.
Given the recent dilution of Pick Of The Pops, discussed elsewhere, I'd have thought that slot might be ideal for Sounds of the 70s, presented by almost anyone other than DW. It might mean losing the services of Steve Harley, who is known to be reluctant to give more than half an hour of his time, but since a lot of what he plays turns up during weekday daytime anyway I'd live with it.

They have been tried and tested and don't work as the same tunes keep rotating. The best man if there was on would have been Mark Goodier as he did do one a few Christmas back, but always added something different to it. |

The same stuff is played week after week - as it is on Steve's ridiculous afternoon show - all thanks to the playlist. A general request show has not been tried and tested on Radio 2 since Ed Stewart was axed last year. |
