Teletext viewers have voted the theme tune to cult 1960s TV show The White Horses the best, writes Charlie Ghagan.
The opening song to the children's series narrowly beat that of Doctor Who and detective drama Van der Valk in a vote to find the greatest television theme tune of all time.
The White Horses was a Yugoslav-German co-production dubbed into English for BBC1 and based on a teenage girl's equestrian adventures.
Its distinct theme song - credited to Irish artist Jacky - became a top 10 hit in the UK charts in April 1968.
All 13 black and white episodes of The White Horses were screened that year and repeated throughout the 1970s - but the BBC later erased its tapes.
The White Horses received 24.8% of the vote, ahead of Doctor Who (22.9%), Van der Valk (20.7%), Prisoner Cell Block H (16.5%) and Black Beauty (15%).
Other popular choices acclaimed on TV Talking Point included The A-Team, The Persuaders! and Hill Street Blues.

Thank God for that! "White Horses" was the bane of my life as a schoolkid - if it was wet and there was nothing to do on a school holiday, chances are this would be on what passed for kids tv in the morning in the late 1970s.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I remember 'White horses' It was about a teenage girl called Julia (I think)who was sent to her uncles (??) stud farm for her summer vacation. There she began to help the groom look after the horses and I remember some sort search for a stolen horse. The uncle bred white Lipizzaner (sp)? horses, hence the shows title.
Anyone remember 'The Flashing Blade' and 'Belle and Sebastien' Ahhh memories. Three great theme tunes I can remember to this day to. _________________ Put some records on while I pour |

White Horses, there's a surprise.
Used in an advert for Clarks Shoes last year. Not currently available.
With the inclusion of Cell Block H and Black Beauty in the top five we can perhaps guess the likely gender of the majority of the voters. _________________ Ron |

Fantastic theme! Pity that the programmes themselves were French and the dialogue replacement was a bit naff..... the titles were the best bit, in fact.
My personal favourite is the whole titles sequence (including music) to The Avengers. Can't beat it. The series has been running on BBC3 a lot recently and looks great. |

Googled it. Wasnt this the "inspiration" for the my little horse song that Father Ted & Dougal entered the Eurovision with? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
