Recently there's been more debate about raising the minimum driving age to 18 to cut down on accidents.
Are those making this suggestion sure that it isn't older drivers who didn't give up when they should have done who cause the accidents?
To implement this would be hard on people like my oldest son, who started driving as soon as he was 17, passed his test first time (unlike his old dad, who needed two tries) and has been an excellent driver ever since he started.
How about this--why not leave the qualifying age unchanged at 17 but stipulate a minimum period of experience, say six months, before a first attempt at taking a test can be made.

I think they should make the test a lot harder and require more experience, including a period of prebation, to stop these 17-25 year olds wiping out themselves, their mates and other innocent motorists.
They should also get police back on the roads and not speed cameras. |

limit engine size like they do with bikes. maybe extend it so that the only way you can increase your engine size is to have a probationary period where you accumulate no penalty points or cause an accident where your speed was the primary contributory factor. something along the lines of 17-19=1.0litre, 19-21=1.4litre, 21-23=1.6litre etc and limit 2 litres and over to over 25's. your incentive to drive properly is the chance to move up to a better car. imagine that! no more immature 17 year old idiots racing around in subaru imprezas!
hard to be "da man!" in a 1 litre corsa.
you see any pimped out car (fat exhaust, blacked out windows and obligatory 1000 watt stereo) and it is invariably a yoof under 25. limit what they can drive and clamp down hard if they infringe the rules.
its always amazing me that the lousiest driving is committed by drivers in these types of cars ( and of course their insurance companies, if they are insured of course!, are fully aware of all the modifications they have made!!!!)who tell us endlessly how great they are and how its everyone else who gets in their way.
Its no use making the test harder. anyone can drive like a vicar for an hour. their driving skills(term used loosely for this example!!) are not the issue, its the sheer arrogance when they are out on the road. I would like to see a law of "arrogant driving" or "being in possession of a gawdy car!" introduced. that would get a fair few off the roads _________________ "Timpani!, Timpani!, They've all got it Timpani!"- All drummers know the pain of skin trouble. |
