|

Lead story on the BBC One-O'clock News was the deaths last night of two boys, aged six and seven, who had strayed onto the M56 Motorway and were hit by three cars. Report here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/merseyside/7061658.stm
I know that this came up in the discussions about Madeleine McCann, but I find it staggering that no mention or criticism has (yet) been made of the parents for not having closer supervision of their children. The father is quoted as having told them "to stay away from the motorway", as if it's their fault entirely.
When they're at school we expect the teaching staff to have absolute control of our children, hence the fences and gates which have been erected around all schools, even secondary ones, recently, and there's hell to pay should one of them be found to be outside or go missing. Should parents not be expected to exert similar control when they're at home? _________________ Ron |

I can see it now the highways agency will be checking all motorway hard shoulders to see if they can put up wire fencing, like network rail did alongside rail tracks. |

Along every inch of motorway in the UK? Are you serious? And how much will that cost us all?
I remember when the decision was taken (rightly) to install central barriers on all motorways - and that cost a small fortune as well.
It would be cheaper to give stupid parents a slap when their kids walk near or on nearby motorways. |

no mention either of the poor motorists who would not have seen (and lets face it, would not have been expecting to see) two young kids in the carriageway until it was way too late.
a terrible event for EVERYONE involved _________________ "Timpani!, Timpani!, They've all got it Timpani!"- All drummers know the pain of skin trouble. |

They certainly should be being told of the dangers of all roads at that age. That's what the 'Tufty club' of the 1960s and 'The Green cross code' of the 1970s both did. I don't know what (or indeed if) there are any road safety programmes being taught in schools these days. If there aren't any, then perhaps something should be re-instated. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack.

It just saddens me, such an awful loss of 2 young lives and how must those poor drivers that hit them be feeling as I know that if it was me, it would haunt me all my days.

Part of me agrees with your sentiments, BB - the other half of me thinks along the lines of 'Darwinism in Action' - as I increasingly start to think every time I hear of kids/adults being completely irresponsible (with the usual fatal consequences) when they should know better. _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

I cannot accept that these 2 young lads really knew, or understood, the consequences of what they were doing trying to cross a motorway, on scooters at night and the drivers that hit them had no chance to avoid them. Maybe I am soft, but where children are concerned it really upsets me when anything tragic, like this happens to them.
