|
|
The character Vera Duckworth is to be killed off in a tear-jerking Coronation Street storyline to be screened early next year, ITV has announced.
Her departure will be filmed in top secret and viewers won't know how she dies until they watch her final episode.
The soap's producers are so keen to keep the cause of death under wraps that three alternative endings have been written.
Letters have also been sent to newspapers and magazines asking them not to leak details.
Liz Dawn, who's played Vera for more than three decades, is leaving the show due to ill health.
A lifelong smoker, she was diagnosed with lung disease emphysema five years ago.
Liz, 68, quit smoking in 2002 after her diagnosis.
The decision to kill off the character was taken after consultation between producer Steve Frost, executive producer Kieran Roberts and the actress herself.
They all felt it was better to have a dramatic finale rather than compromise the characters of Vera and husband Jack by having the actress return for future guest appearances.
She said: "It's going to be very emotional filming Vera's death scenes but I do think it is the right decision for the character."
Steve Frost said: "After discussions with Liz Dawn we have settled on a heart-breaking exit story which will see Vera leave Coronation Street in 2008."
He said Liz's contribution to Coronation Street has been "remarkable", and went on to add: "It has been a great privilege to work with Liz and I wish her a very happy and very well-deserved retirement."

Well, to be honest, talking about Vera Duckworth is by far better than talking about that long haired freak. |

The news she was being bumped off was revealed about two weeks ago because of her illness. |

I heard Terry Wogan blabbering on about it when I drove to work this morning. He didn't seem at all impressed with her return, either. |

I reckon La Douglas should offer her a job doing drivetime. She'd be a damned sight more entertaining than the self-obsessed and deluded twit who's doing it currently! |

Patsy and Chris on Drivetime. A pair of gobby gingers.
A match made in heaven perhaps a la Dermot O'Leary and Davina McCall? |

Sounds pretty good to me. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Drivetime with Ricky and Bianca-ca-ca-ca-ca-ca. |

Or maybe she might die of natural causes. Not many people seem to die that way in today's soaps. They're either shot, murdered, die in a tragic accident or commit suicide. |
