Has, or does, anyone else on this forum suffer from depression? I have been suffering from it since January (hence some of my health problems). Recently, I have started to feel depressed again. Could this be because of the time of year i.e. Christmas coming up? I'm not particularly looking forward to it.

Hello Some Like It Scott! Everyone gets the blues at times. I find that seeking out a friend to talk to even if it is only via the phone is usually a good 'tonic'. I used to dislike Christmas, mind you I was a postman and I was too knackered to enjoy it! Laughing

Scott,

Yes I do suffer from depression and take depression tablets, and if I come off them it can effect me. It can be the change of weather and as Briant says the time of year where people are rushing around. Try to keep away from busy areas which can make you depressed even more. I would say try not to drink too much as that makes you worse, and you will only blank out the depression for a while.

Why not take some Kalms?

I personally don't care much for Christmas either, but that's more to do with being 300 and 3000 miles away from my nearest family, so it's more of a lonely time when everyone else I know seems to be having a lovely time. I'm thankfully not having to resort to Prozac just yet, though.

Christmas is more lonely than cold, if you know what I mean.

The thing with depression is that rarely ( unless something upsetting has happened) has anything important changed from the time when you weren't depressed, so if follows that the only thing that has changed is how you "currently perceive" your situation. Thinking about that logically, if nothing has actually changed from the time when you weren't depressed then there is no reason to be depressed now. It's just an imbalance of chemicals in the brain that causes depression. It can be caused by a shed load of different chemical imbalances, often seasonal but more to do with what you eat seasonally than what the weather is doing.
Eat some proper food, drink lots of water, take a bit of proper exercise, ( go for a walk) smile at the things/people that/who get you down and don't get frustrated at the things you cannot change. Think about what you really want to do with your life for long enough to decide what it really is. Then do it!
In the search for happiness, you'll only find it, if you take it with you.

I've had periodic bouts of depression for several decades--ever since my teens, in fact. Most of the time it's been fairly low-level and it's simply been a case of waiting for it to lift but a couple of times, in 1987 and 1996, it laid me low enough to take some time off work.

If I were ever to get into that state again, I'd stick with my GP, who was brilliant both times, and not try to do too much too soon. As I came out of it I'd probably feel ready to set some post-depression objectives re going back to work and dealing with the world at large again. BUT DON'T ATTEMPT THIS TILL YOU FEEL READY.

The one thing that I personally wouldn't do is go on another course of tablets, except perhaps in the very short term. Last time I saw how easy it would be to become addicted to them and at the earliest opportunity agreed with my GP a programme of phased withdrawal.

Re Christmas, I appreciate the family and devotional side of it but worry about all the related commercial pressures.

I do hope all of us can have a blues-free time this winter.

Ian.

Thanks for your replies. Smile

I woke up this morning feeling really depressed but I have since perked up a bit. It's strange how some days I feel on top of the world and other days I feel depressed. I can be fine one minute then hacked off the next. One of my work colleagues has suggested I could bi-polar due to my sudden personality changes and mood swings.

Next time you see a bloke freezing his nuts off juggling in the street for coppers or strumming a guitar in a subway or someone trying to sell Big Issues ask yourself "WTF have I got to be depressed about ?" and snap out of it !!! Mad

Nonsense. People are homeless for a reason, some due to their own fault. I'm not going to disclose to you why I am suffering from depression because it's a private. A combination of problems have caused it.

What you fail to understand is my circumstances and personal problems differ to somebody who is flogging copies of TBI on street corners.

So, stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Exactly. Excessive introspection & self analysis is just asking for depression.

You talk some sh!te at times Nelson, if it's so freakin' private, don't come on a public forum bleating about it.. save it for Trisha Goddard ! You've got a job, a car, money in your pocket, a roof over your head and food in your cupboard so suck it up and get a grip. Change places for a week with some poor sod living in a cardboard box in a shop doorway and then come back and tell me how depressed you were sleeping in the open with an air temp of -2c ! Depressed ?? my backside !!

I don't think so. That's something you're good at doing at.

I did not disclose reasons behind my downfall. If you don't like a particular topic then don't read/reply. Simple.

Like I told you in a previous postings, my circumstances are different to some wee-smelling wino. I actually go to work - and pay my taxes. Wino's don't.

Nobody says they have to life that kind of lifestyle. Many vagrants are homeless because of their own fault.

I have to say Two Stepper, you're about as sympathetic as some of the twatty white Doctor's in my local surgery. Al least the black, Asian and Spanish Docs there are sympathetic and show a duty of care.

Are your Dr Leighton in disguise by any chance? You sure sound like the miserable old codger.

The remarks addressed to Scott by Two Stepper are clearly applicable to me, too.

I had hoped that sharing my experience might encourage anyone going through difficult times to believe that there is a way out. Instead, I've encountered the all too often expressed snap-out-of-it response that seems very rife amongst those who are fortunate enough never to experience the Black Dog.

All you know about Scott and me is what we choose to divulge on these boards and you are hence in no position to sit in judgement.

Of course I'm aware of the tough time that the homeless and Big Issue sellers have (I often purchase copies of the Big Issue) but implying that others don't suffer because of this is as ludicrous as it would be if I said that the unemployed don't have to worry about job stress (which was a significant factor in both my episodes of sick leave).

By all means, Two Stepper, continue to put an opposing point of view but let's end the gratuitous insults right now.

Ian.

Hmm,

This word censor has some weaknesses, I tried to censor F and three asterisks and replace it with flip, but all that does is replace EVERY word beginning with f

See what I mean, very amusing Laughing

It becomes a wildcard substitution - and changes not just everything beginning with that particular letter but also that letter on its own. And why try and *ilter every word beginning with that letter? What about the word that ends "ull" or "irst", etc? In phpBB admin you have to identi*y an exact string for substitution, you can't use wildcards in that manner.

Well, that was fun. F is back to normal.

I was trying to replace F*** (F followed by three asterisks) with Flip, but since * is the 'wildcard' it meant every word starting with F was changed to Flip Laughing

Someone close to me suffered from depression. A doctor, who has since died, told her, 'just be thankful you're not living in Northern Ireland'. She has never forgotten the sheer insensitivity of that statement.

My present GP is a lot more sensitive to people's problems.

My sister-in-law was a manic depressive who, even though she had a nice family and no money worries, would descend into the depths for no discernable reason. Then she started playing sports, and now she's so consumed with this that she very rarely has downturns at all. There's something in it!
