The only way to "preserve" Radio 2 is to let it evolve with the times.

As for "quality and diversity" I would argue that Evans show has maintained or added to the diversity on the network. You must remember that although the Walker show appealed to you, it put off loads of others with its rather narrow focus on American soft rock music and country. The features were nothing special either. The mystery voice was pure local radio. The best bits have been kept and built upon. Rebecca & Johnny are making sport & business accessible to a wider audience, the food & lifestyle features are also done now with a genuine enthusiasm that relates strongly with a core audience in their 30 and 40's especially.

The music is the most diverse on any daytime show. The show actually bothered to go on the road to the listeners in places no other show would go to because they aren't glamourous enough (Auchterderran, Castlederg, Sebastapol anyone)

What has been most heartening is the posts on the old R2 message board of people who were initially shocked at the decision to give the show to him, who subsequently listened and now love the show. He wont win over everyone but even Sir Terry has people who cant stand him.

Ernie, I can only disagree with you about the current Driveltime, the business news is now, too in your face along with the dreadful jingly music in the back ground, Martin was so much more professional, informative and just presented it well. I would like to know how F'ing & blinding on a Saturday morning when children of all ages could be listening is evolution of quality radio. Yet we have Steve Wright on for 15 hours weekdays and 2 hours weekend with a format and presentation style that was good on R1 in the early 80's, yet seems so stale & dated now. Mark Radcliffe was absolutely brilliant doing SW's show, his night slot is great, this is because he has changed and matured in his presentation style for R2. We have Tel doing a morning show that appears not to have changed, but it has eveolved slowly and he has maintained a R2 style show loved by millions of listeners. RA standing has always been excellent,IMHO, as has been JW. Desmond Carrington presents a show of great diversity which appeals to many, Suzi Q, Paul Jones, Mike Harding, Bob Harris, Steve Harley, Brian Matthew, Parky, Gambo, Nick Barrclough & many others provide excellent specialist shows, not all to my liking, but all fit into the R2 quality of production. I just cannot for the life of me see how, by any stretch of the imagination, the radically different styles of Wossy & Evans fit into this R2, they are more R1 1/2, IMHO. I am not against change, I was unsure of JV replacing JY, however, I now find the lunch time show very good. You must agree that CE & JR have alienated a great many R2 listeners and particularly for the Drivetime slot have no where else comparable to tune to. You like CE, I don't and I don't normally listen, I have tried as he has supposedly mellowed, but I cannot see where. I now listen to R4, most of the time, sometimes Planet Rock or Classic FM. I, like many others, I believe, cannot understand why RA or SM is not presenting Drivetime. However, we could debate this for hours and not get anywhere, so to you and all other posters I wish a very merry Christmas, a peaceful New Year and good listening over this happy period. Razz

I gave up with Wossy after he started going on at length about 'taking someone (w)oughly against a tree' one morning. Not that I'm prudish about such things, y'understand, but I didn't think it was appropriate for around 1015 on a Saturday morning - some people are still having their breakfast at that time! Rolling Eyes

If that's the 'evolution of Radio 2' in action, then I'm happy to be left behind, I'm afraid....

Merry Christmas. I wont be making ANY defence for Wright or Ross as I'm not a fan of Wright in particular. I would say that Evans NEW show is far more in the traditional Radio 2 vein than either Ross or Wright are. Radio 2 daytime is 1st and foremost an entertainment zone (nights & weekends are for the specialist stuff)
