So announced the deadly H5NI which can be harmful to humans has been found in Suffolk.

Will anyone be avoiding the old Turkey on the plate at Christmas this year?

If anymore is found I might stick to Beef or Pork.

My place here has lots of Pigeons. I know most folk think they're dirty flying rats, but heck they have to live somewhere and I can put up with them. In fact, I feed about 25 or so every day.
They are quite tame. ( and they're lovely birds too as it happens!)

Over the last few weeks, three have been found dead and I have one now which appears drunk; lost it's sense of balance completely.
I'm looking after it and hopefully it'll pull round.

Apparently, there were a dozen or so dead Seagulls washed up on our beach a few weeks ago too and notices have been posted asking people to report any strange bird deaths.
But shouldn't the local news inform us of the symptoms?

Yes, we'll be having Turkey for Christmas... Laughing

Trouble appears to be there are no noticeable symptoms in birds, even in death, and they infect other birds by direct contact and by saliva left on the ground, on cages etc.

A bird's life is short and precarious and many of them die, for a variety of reasons, daily, and are left to rot, be eaten by other birds or animals, or be transported by rivers and sea. Seems we need a hygenic and speedier mechanism for reporting and disposal. More expense, I'm afraid.

On what we know now, I shan't be avoiding turkey on health grounds but if there's a shortage the price might become an issue.

I can see that a worrying feature of this outbreak is that they have yet to find the source - there are no dead bodies (of wild birds) in the vicinity.

Interesting to hear that there have been cases all through the year not only in the Czech Republic (which is named as the most likely origin) but also Germany and France. Haven't seen the headlines and mass panic about it in their media.
