The former Prime Minister of Rhodesia, Ian Smith, has died aged 88.

He will be best remebered for illegally declaring independence from Britain in 1965.

His supporters no doubt saw him as a saviour, whilst those on the other side probably regarded him as the devil incarnate.

It was said of him that getting him to negotiate was like trying to nail jelly to a wall.

How do you think history will view this man?

Ian.

Well, his defiance of Harold Wilson's government and steadfast belief in the benefits to his country of white minority rule, have long been overshadowed by the sorry mess that Zimbabwe has become following recognised independence and majority rule under Robert Mugabe.

He was obviously a man of strong will, honesty and principle, which he stuck to to the end, by all accounts modest, and patriotic, both to his native country (he was born in Rhodesia) and to Britain in wartime. What more could you ask of a nation's leader?

Of the obituaries, The Times is probably the best - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article2910986.ece

That point did occur to me.

But this thread is based on fact, not speculation!
