...when I heard a part of his show last night whilst listening on my non-DAB radio.
He and another chap were talking about eating bone marrow...
He said he used to scoop the marrow out of bones when he was a kid as a treat??
Is he serious? I've never heard of this before and felt I quite ill thinking about it.
The show was bad enough already.... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, Pal dog food used to be advertised as containing marrow bone jelly, presumably from animals such as ox and beef cattle. It was apparently a mediaevil delicacy for humans and here' a page with recipes for pasties and stuffed quinces using it:-

Don't fancy it myself, but who's to know what's in your average supermarket steak & kidney pie? _________________ Ron

When I was a child (in Holland) marrowbones were part of the stock my mum used for making soup. She used to fish the marrow bones out for my father who would suck the marrow out. I don't know what it tasted like, but my mum said it was "good for men". (with a to my dad).
Since he seemed to enjoy them, I can only think she was right.

I remember the advert Ron... "Pal, Prolongs Active Life"
Just reading the recipes, I can understand how it was viewed as nutricious in days of old but Apple stuffed with Marrow?.. no thanks.
On the other hand I don't suppose it's any worse than you'll find in a Sausage or Big Mac...
"" It used to be a delicacy, but now it is looked upon with suspicion (BSE, cholesterol). This distrust and repulsion is not justified. Bone marrow contains iron, phosphorus, vitamin A, and contains 75% monounsaturated fat which is believed (though not yet proven beyond a doubt) to reduce the risk of heart disease and even some cancers. Since the shin bone is not connected to the brain or spine, there is no risk of BSE."" _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

The Fast Show used 'full o' meaty goodness!' from a Pal ad on one of their Chanel 9 sketches.
Has Evans played Genesis's 'Supper's Ready' yet on All-Request Friday? Especially for the line in the Apocalypse In 9/8 section: 'he's getting out the marrow in your backbone...' _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.
