A lollipop lady has been banned from dressing up this Christmas by her council bosses - let us know what you think
A lollipop lady who has worn festive fancy dress for the past 20 years has been banned from dressing up by her council bosses who fear it could be a health and safety risk.
54-year-old grandmother Margaret Russell has been told she can't wear her costume of a Christmas bell because it prevents her from wearing reflective clothing.
Parents and councilors have joined up to attack the move, branding it "political correctness gone mad".
In previous years she has helped children cross the road dressed as a turkey, reindeer, a star and even a Christmas tree in the last two weeks of term.
But following a complaint by two parents, the council said she could not dress up any more.
A Southampton council spokesperson said:
"We are currently looking at ways in which we can continue to help Mrs Russell fundraise during the coming days and to help her carry out her duties legally.
The safety of our children and staff is extremely important and by not wearing reflective clothing it does make crossing control supervisors less visible to drivers and puts their safety as well as the safety of pedestrians and motorists in jeopardy.
We commend and support Mrs Russell in raising money for charity which is why on Monday we covered her crossing duties to allow her to do this, and are now looking at other ways in which we can help.
Not wearing suitable reflective clothing is not only unsafe but is also against the law.
The law requires that Patrol Officers must be wearing the appropriate clothes to legally enable them to stop traffic. If a child or pedestrian were hit by a vehicle when a Patrol Officer was not wearing the right clothes, any driver could not be prosecuted.

On balance, in a worst-case scenario in our litigious society, everyone would be on a hiding to nothing - children, parents, motorists, lollipop lady, police and council - so I suppose they're right

I think the stage she has taken it to would interfere with her ability to do her job. If she is busy prancing around as a Christmas log, would she be focussed on her actual job?

Have to say, living fairly close to a few schools around me, I totally agree with Ernie's comments on this story.
Don't want appear a supporter of the "PC gone mad world" but the stance taken by the council seems sensible imho. |
