It's not like me at all to watch Songs of Praise or to find myself totally impressed by a female singer recently, but I caught a smidge of Andrea Ross on Sunday's programme singing "What the World Needs Now".

I was quite gobsmacked.... superb young singer.

Maybe she's well known, but I've not heard of her before.

She is a protegee of Andrew Lloyd Webber, who introduced her at his Sydmonton Festival in 2005 and apparently helped her gain her recording contract with Universal. She had reportedly come to his notice by being sent tapes by her mother, but she appears to have shone quite brightly in her local production of High School Musical.

and her own site, where samples of her album are heard http://www.andreaross.com/

She'll be the ripe age of seventeen in April.

The album was given the usual hyperbolic adverstising push last spring/summer and she did the rounds of the morning and daytime tv shows. It was slightly incongruous to see someone so young in a soft-focus glossy video singing such a mature song as Moon River, and then, as live, What The World Needs Now, and my impression was that, while there is undoubtedly potential to be a great performer in musical theatre she still has a teenage girl's voice, and it smacked a bit of marketing over substance.
