The government says the Senior Salaries Review Body's recommended 2.56% pay rise for MPs should be awarded in two stages - making it worth 1.9%.
Commons Leader Harriet Harman insisted that the principles of below-inflation pay rises for public sector workers "should also apply to MPs".
All three main parties are backing the lower figure amid controversy over pay for teachers and police officers.
MPs are set to vote on the issue during a set piece debate on 24 January.
The independent review body recommendations would push an MP's salary up from £60,277 to £61,820.

Even the Prime Minister Gordon Brown and David Cameron and other Cabinet staff , not back bencher's will have their pay dropped. It will be the last time MP's will be able to vote on Pay, as it's emerged will be done differently in future pay deals. |

Where does it say their pay will be dropped?
Are MPs paid enough? Remember how much they can claim on expenses - travel, car expenses, meals, assistants, books, computer services, alternative accomodation etc etc.
I wonder out of that £60,000 how much income tax they pay? Joe Bloggs earning that would pay about £16,000 in tax.

The PM, mindful of the flak now coming from the teachers and (England & Wales) police, has said they should accept a lower amount. He and Jack Straw are giving up some of their special pension privileges, which will make them worse off.

MPs have to vote on the issue themselves, and many aren't happy. They're pretty thick, er, skinned, and I don't suppose they care a fig if you and I, or Mr Plod or Miss Miss, are forced to accept less.

It could have been worse. They were talking at one point about awarding themselves 10%.

Things are getting so bad that some MPs are having to take 2nd jobs to make ends meet.
Tony Blair had to come out of retriement because his pension wasnt enough and joined a bank to feed his family. The poor man must hate being a cashier down Barclays, but needs must!
